.308 or 30-06

Interesting note, a friend once pulled the bullet on one of those light magnums, the same powder couldn't fit back into the case!
All kinds speculation was offered on just how they originally they got it in there!
Cat

Long drop tube while using the reloading version of a hoo-ha rattler to shake the case? lol

Not in any of my 308's. - dan

I think but am not sure that the "Light Magnum" has been replaced with the "Superformance" line of ammo. Their 165 gr 308 Win load claims 2840 FPS. Its loaded with (I assume) Superformance powder?

Does it reach that velocity? Dunno. But then thats factory ammo.

It always amazes me that the ones that blow the horns the loudest about 308's and 30-06's always load the crap out of them in order to chase magnum ish velocities. This kind of defeats the whole "non magnum" argument?
Just run the bigger case?

Or better yet just run the 7 RM... is does everything being described, one hell of lot easier. Remington was even thoughtful enough to offer a short action version to help out the 308 "must have a short action" guys.

But then where would we be without the constant ruler out, pants down metrology contest that is forum life?

Wait you're telling me a bigger case can be loaded faster than a case with much less capacity? Just crazy talk haha. People have already mentioned running that weight of bullet even faster from their 30-06s.

The discussion was around how some factory ammo is definitely going to disappoint if its shot over a chronograph and one cannot assume you're getting what the box says, so not sure what you're getting at here, really. Plenty of people here are already talking about loading and shooting 30-06 even hotter than you are.
Yay.

Yes, because people are downloading the 7mm Remington Magnum.

If its loaded within safe pressures what's the problem? One is taking advantage of modern powder's and case capacity. It's not hard to do. Consider the Federal high energy loads or Hornady Superformance in a 30-06, those loads match factory 7mm rem mag energy and once you look at a loading manual one will realize the 7mm rem mag is very underloaded. It's like having a high performance vehicle but running octane 86 and driving your car at 50 km an hour versus using the 91 and getting the most out of your engine. Both will get you from point A to B but one more so enjoys the performance and experience along the way. To each their own, no need to be "amazed".

Except the pressures aren't within the specifications. That was the whole point. Comparing handloads to factory offerings doesn't really work either.
To each his own.
The 308 and 30-06 horn blowers continue to amaze...

that does not solve the problem, that changes the problem to "which ####ing gun am i taking this time?" problem
reduces the online debate to an internal individual one

Really it’s not a that bad of a problem to have (choosing which one to take) and one which most of us have tbh.

Personally I’d much rather have multiple tools avail covering off various scenarios, than just a one & done myself. But hey for some the “only one” works and there’s nothing wrong with that either.

Most 30-06 factory ammo is not loaded to specs of 58k psi. 180gr at 2650ish seems to be the norm over a chrono, yet when loaded to true 58k psi spec 2800-2850fps is safely attainable and hardly hot rodding. One can also argue that they can pass the threshold of SAAMI specs and load up to 65,000 psi limit as found in a 270 win, 6mm rem, 22-250 and etc. The same could be said for a lot of ammo in a 7mm rem mag, a lot of it is underloaded in around 55,000 psi based off the weight and velocity found on the back of boxes. For example, Nosler Custom factory loads shoots a 160gr at 2950 fps as noted on the box, looking into data and pressures, that is approx. 54,000 psi, yet when one reloads within safe specs of 62,000 psi one will achieve another 100 fps advantage.

This goes for any given cartridge out there, be it a magnum or a standard cartridge, whether that's a 30-06, 7mm rem, 300 win, 338 win. In a modern rifle with safe loading practices, aiming to get it's full potential is nothing to fret about.

Indeed, getting the most you can is hardly rare among handloaders of any cartridge
