Likely nothing to do with which cartridge or bullet

Original post made assumptions re the .284s, Whelen, 9.3 etc..but his final decision was the 30-06 because..
bullet weight? Then long distance shooting and bison hunting came up? Something doesn't really add up.

OP, You have built a very nice 30-06 that you will enjoy, and probably your kids too.
I hate to even think about the time it took to produce this beautiful rifle. Time well

Literally years. Not working on it full time, obviously, there was time waiting on the gunsmith, downtime when I had to put it aside for the sake of my sanity, and it wasn't an 8-hr/day job. From the time I acquired the donor rifle, to the point where I could tighten the action screws on a complete rifle- 2 1/2 yrs

There's no sling attached, and likely no ammo in it either.
