FATHER WHOSE 3-YEAR-OLD SHOT TWO TURKEY HUNTERS DURING YOUTH SEASON CHARGED WITH FELONIES

Back in April, we covered the shocking Wisconsin turkey hunting accident where a 3-year-old girl pulled the trigger of a 12-gauge shotgun and shot a 40-year-old man and his 7-year-old son. Now the father supervising that hunt, 35-year-old Racine County sheriff’s deputy James Lehman, has been charged with four felonies. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of second-degree reckless injury with a dangerous weapon and two counts of injury by negligent use of a dangerous weapon.

According to the criminal complaint, Lehman told investigators he saw what he believed was a turkey and positioned the shotgun before having his daughter pull the trigger. The victims were about 39 yards away. The father suffered multiple pellet wounds, while his 7-year-old son suffered wounds to his head and back that required surgery. Three pellets reportedly remain in the boy’s spinal cord, skull and brain.

There is another important part of this story. Lehman did not have a Wisconsin hunter education certificate because his military service qualified him for an exemption. He reportedly told investigators he was not an experienced turkey hunter and that this was one of his first times hunting independently. His initial court appearance is scheduled for September 10. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

Shooting at movement without verifying the target is dangerous behaviour he's lucky they were not killed but it sounds like the boy is not clear of all physical damage let alone the mental damage.

Taking a 3 year old out on a turkey hunt when your an experienced hunter is a dumb idea let alone someone who is new to hunting.

I wonder if the people shot were wearing blaze orange or camo.... a hand held thermal optic might have been useful for identifying the target but at the end of the day if you can't see what your shooting at clearly you should not shoot.

Fun fact we have almost the identical number of firearms related accidents in Canada per capita as the US, with about half the gun ownership per capita...so we are in fact roughly twice as likely to have a fatal firearms accidents in this country. Neither country reliably tracks accidental firearms injuries that are not fatal but those are estimated to be roughly 10x that of fatal accidents. So, that sort of inverts your smug little theory...according to the department of justice and stats canada in Canada and johns hopkins and the CDC in the US.

I'm giving the genius involved some benefit of the doubt and assuming the other hunters were in camo and or thick cover.... but who knows it's a story and there are 3 sides.

Common sense trumps tech in my world and likely yours by the looks of it.... but since you brought it up how much are thermal drones and are they easier to use then a handheld in situations like this? Seems a little over the top, excuse the pun.
 
I'm guessing the child pulled the trigger while Daddy held the gun, then at the dinner table everyone could say "Wow, this is the turkey little Leslie shot for us!" Whatever the case though, things can't have worked out as planned.

What age should a kid be for his first hunt? Well, I had to be old enough to toddle along behind my old man as he spent the afternoon stalking around the woods nonstop for an entire Sunday afternoon, even if I thought a couple of hours was plenty good enough. And that's how I still hunt myself!
 
How do you turkey hunt with a 3 year old?

1. You drug the child and to be asleep?
2. You tie him to a chair and tape his mouth and to be quiet?
3. You build a sound proof box and you lock him up in there with a tablet and video games?
4. You leave him in the truck while you are sitting in your hunting blind?

I don't get it ....
 
I took my kids to my deer blind when they were 3. It took a lot of heat, snacks, and books to keep them quiet enough to feel like hunting was worthwhile. I believe my daughter was 4 years old when she was with me when I shot a deer. No chance she'd pull the trigger.

My son was shooting pellet guns and 22's when he was 3 and 4. Definitely not without help though.
 
Just seems very 'weird'..maybe more to the 'story'? Regardless, the guys the worst kind of dumb-jazz, & apparently Father-
