Cormorant opening week

Went past a large navigation marker in the Thousand Islands this summer that was covered with hundreds of cormorants. Downwind of it. Quite the experience.
If there are lots of cormorants, there are lots of fish. Should fish numbers drop, so will the cormorant numbers.
Doubt that sporadic culling is going to make much difference to the size of the overall population.

Speaking of fish eating birds, why are there no pelicans in the Great Lakes basin? In the West, they range all the way to the southern NWT. You'd think they would follow the Mississippi flyway to reach the Great Lakes.
Along the same lines, why aren't there magpies throughout Ontario?

I have seen pelicans in Sask, while not common in southern Ontario, I have seen the odd on on Lake St. Clare and have heard of some on Lake Ontario. Maybe they like the more alkaline water of Sask?

S-hit Hawks are protected in Ontario, and what a mess they make on flat roofs, parking lots, closed beaches... And then there are Geese.... :(

Imagine the mess we’d see and smell if there wasn’t seagulls and other scavengers cleaning up. 😉
A few years back Toronto wanted to keep their beaches and parks clean and open. They proposed rounding up the geese, processing them, and feeding the homeless and destitute, the public was outraged at the idea of killing the geese and both the public and the homeless were having no part of it deeming it unsafe.

I remember when the Ontario Department of Highways would pick up road-killed deer and drop them off at the county jail where the cook would butcher it and feed it to the inmates; that's not allowed anymore either.

I’m very open about my hunting and shooting hobbies so it often comes up around those who aren’t into either. It’s surprising how many people believe geese are a protected species and cannot be hunted.

Nevermind not being able to feed people roadkill, places like Tim Hortons used to sell day old donuts or give them away. Now? Between 12:30-2:00am they throw all donuts which are less than 24 hours old into the garbage. Perfectly fine food being tossed.

The waste is ridiculous.
