Which Long Range Caliber for 1600 Yards?

I believe that target is 12"x12", the three targets to the left of the buffalo are 18"x18"
I think it is now, but back then the targets were different. You can see in the (fuzzy) reticle that the target is about 1/2 mil wide at 1000m. So that’s about half a metre, which fits the 18” width I thought it was. 🍻

Hey Wallz,

So I brought my 300PRC to your range and shot in really bad weather. Wind, rain, and even a short hail burst.

The 300PRC could hit whatever it wanted within the limited elevation of the load dev scope I have on it. I went out to 1100m. Even the tiny target at 1085m was ringing in bad weather.

Maybe it would feel different at a mile? I think I’d get bored really fast if I lived here and would step down to something smaller.

Edit to add: I hit the 1385m target tonight with moderate wind and rain, holding with the mil-hash reticle. 😄

I saw the picture in the other thread about scopes. Talk about interesting weather!

Was gonna add something there but it’s just a ##### match right now!

In the meantime my build has derailed, for now! Picked up a mares leg 44 and was busy trying out a new alum butt stock that ended
up working out pretty sweet, so I blacked out the rest of the wood/ brass in a black carbon wrap. To me thing looks stellar!

Plus the fact that I have wanted to build a 45 Raptor for a few years, and came across a barrel that was decently priced. Had to get the rest of the gear to reload for it for hunting season. Just trying to get an action for it now.

I was doing more reading, as I have more time than $$, so was looking at the 284. Could go that route as well on a different action I have, but searched and didn’t really find any brass for it. Be a winter decision now I guess with hunting season in a few weeks.

IMHO .300 PRC is my choice because I have one :) it’s a custom 31” x 1.25” barrel with FALKOR action (might be miss spelt)
In MDT chassis . Have shot out to 1760 a couple of times with multiple hits on 44 x 50 steel . Moving 230 gr Bergers at 2900 fps . Next target and goal
Is setup 2240 . It’s a long ways out there 😁
have shot my Cadex 6.5 CM out to 1462 many times . Even my 6 Dasher with make consistent hits at 1462 on a good day. Most 7mm cartridges will be capable as well .
Doing ELR on a budget (no such thing) is why I went .300 PRC .
The 300 Lapua and Norma are fine cartridges but use more Powder then the PRC and brass is also more expensive.
I reload and can Tailor my rounds to each rifle I own .
It’s a hobby that I enjoy and am getting a lot of satisfaction from it .
As I gain more experience the 1080 yd 36” diameter steel at my home rage is becoming almost like pressing the Easy button with a few different calibers I own .
Again I think there is no wrong answer to to ELR calibers . Use what ever caliber fits your needs or wants . It’s all going to be enjoyable any way you sling rounds down range 😎.
PS all my rifles are shot from a bench and they are relatively heavy - so no true Hunting rifles . I just recently sold my 7mm Tilka that I had successfully shot out to 1462 yds on many occasions with 168gr Sierra Match Kings .

Yes, there are some crazy characters on this site. lol!

The weather was insane at times 🫣 and you’ll have your range back soon. I’m going back to Blackwater to help put some things away this morning before I need to start heading south. Thank you and the other members for your patience while the IPSC Nationals were held there. We had a great time!

The mare’s leg sounds like a great project, as do your other ideas. Keep having fun! 🍻

Did ya win?
I used the Hartman range as I needed to set up a scope on the 22 and test ammo I had for a 22LR blackjack challenge in Vanderhoof in a few weeks. Only need 200m, which was attained at the other range. 100m and 200 m blackjack shoot.
Did the 500m and 700m a few weeks back in Burns lake and had a hoot! This one again will challenge skill sets with the 22 lr out to 200 m.

IMHO .300 PRC is my choice because I have one :) it’s a custom 31” x 1.5” barrel with FALKOR action (might be miss spelt)
In MDT chassis . Have shot out to 1760 a couple of times with multiple hits on 44 x 50 steel . Moving 230 gr Bergers at 2900 fps . Next target and goal

1.5 barrrel and you found a chassis?

Sorry my BAD . Barrel is 1.25"
Little up date on my ELR success .
Have made impacts on 44 x 54" steel at 2218 yds on 3 different occasions so I am very happy with the .300 PRC for what I am doing .
Earlier attempts were completed using full elevation in my scope and holding 6+ mil over target .
Sharp eyed viewers will notice I have a Night Force prism mounted in front of my scope . I now can aim directly on target and make appropriate MIL corrections up or down .
Early morning of Oct 3 I set up and fired 9 rounds at 2218 yds with 6 impacts . Surprised myself is an understatement .
Some pictures of my Rig and plate and yardage .

The one I bought is the 50 MOA or 14.5 Mil
There is a 100 MOA as well .
The 50 MOA was available somewhat close to me From Prophet River so went with what was available .
It will get me out farther then I have room to use it :)

Our range in PG is working on extending from the current 1370 ish meters to 1600ish meters. I know that it may be a year or so before things actually happen, so I have a bit of time, but want to do some leg work and figuring before hand.

I have a current 6 dasher, that I know is just not going to be capable to ringing steel out there consistently, so want to start dreaming of another build to reach 1600 consistently. I know it all can reach, but the key work consistent!

I have a current defiance action that sits as my hunting rifle in 6.5 PRC, that I could spin on a new barrel and use. The set up has a non threaded 22" carbon barrel that I really don't want to shoot out to ring steel with, plus would rather have a break on the end. The few rounds I would need to shoot before hunting season to reset the barrel and scope is a minor detail for me, so not really a factor.

It is a short action, magnum bolt head so it might limit me. I would probably go with a single feed sled in the action, so not concerned with the mag length. I have some new Lapua brass sitting that I could use if I went 6.5 PRC.

Should I stick with the 6.5 PRC and push the 153.5 Berger bullet with it out there, or drop the idea of using the short action and going to a long action, which would mean a new stock as well??? Or is there another alternative in the short action magnum bolt head I would be better served with????

I was recently reading about the 30XC, 338, 338 improved, but don't know if I really want to subject myself to that level of recoil. I also use a 450 BM for hunting and know the recoil pulse, but don't really want constant 50 round strings of recoil to deal with in that range. I know the 6 dasher is kinda spoiling me right now.

The 7 PRC has also been on my radar.

No I'm not gunning to be a sniper, just intrigued with long distance plinking!
You can reach that in a .308 if you do some precision loading and invest some time. But honestly if you want a hard hitting long range I’d shoot for the .338. I personally stay away from the 6.5s of any variety just cause it’s not what I’m setup for. But if it where me I’d stay .30 cal in what I can economically put rounds down range in and dial in the load with. If you are building a setup from scratch and money is no object. Try that 7. You can reach out there with anything if you have the setup and time.

Id second a 338 lapua magmum. Fast heavy bullets. I actually have a savage 110 fcp hs in 338 lm. I reload my own ammo, shot about an inch at 300m, zeroed at 300m. Hits milk jugs easy at 800m. Haven't found a spot to push it further but its capable.
