Which would you pick for a higher-end bolt rifle?

The Winchester 70 Classic Sporter I have here from the end of the USRAC days is a very reliable push feed rifle lol. As many of them are. But, with some smithing, I think they could be high end. The pre 64 even more so.

That said, when it comes to "high end", there's something to be said for smoothness, accuracy, consistency of the Tikka. And very tight tolerances. Although I can well understand that sticking in my craw if I spent 4x or more the price of the Tikka on a "high end" rifle haha

No doubt. Who said they were?
Asking an open ended question like the OP is the same as asking how long a piece of string is. Since the OP stated his budget, then the conversation should have stayed within those parameters. It then becomes the “highest end rifle for $2500”. Not a snob contest or an opportunity for a put down.

.308... gonna go load up some ammo and hopefully be back soon with a range report. I know the bases/rings setup is terribly ugly but it's what I had on hand

Even if some might think the mounts/ scope height are ugly and depending on person the cheek height might be a bit low there are advantages. A heavier scope mounted higher will mostly alter the Centre of gravity closer to the centre bore. This will in turn lead to a rifle that is nicer and easier to shoot. Accuracy improves as well.

Who put it down? You? All I see is you putting his choice down. No one else.

True that...depending on what you want your overall weight to be, heavier scope = heavier system = more stability, less recoil

It’s all in the eye of the rifle holder…

Example: If a rifle is a status symbol, and you’re trying to impress others with your choice of purchase, then you’re running a race you’ll never win. Someone will always have better.
If your rifle is a tool that accomplishes the task at hand for you, year after year, then that’s probably the better route for most.

A Timex tells the same time as a Rolex.

And if your life depends on it you are getting the Rolex. Some know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

The Timex quartz is actually more accurate lol

Durability, dunno, but there are plenty of durable/reliable rifles on the market today at all price points. Hey we gotta have SOME good news as shooters/hunters now and then!

The problem with bolt action rifles is that mostly 100% of the stock weight is below the bore line. To balance over the bore line a rifle one needs similar weight with the scope to compensate. It makes for nicer shooting. If one wants to save weight it is better to reduce stock weight and barrel weight. Lighter stock allows for lighter scope if one wants to stay balanced. We will bed our second 7PRC this week, we will have two identical actions and barrels. One in a lighter stock with lighter scope the other slightly heavier stock and scope but both balanced.
Yes overall recoil is a point but it is also important how a rifle recoils. Stock shape and balance help.

How very dramatic. If your actual life is on the line every single time you go hunting… you are doing something seriously wrong.
The price of everything and the value of nothing certainly implies that your purchases fall into the impress others category… but we already knew that.
Most any rifle today that has had its function ensured, will go bang when it’s supposed to.

A tempest in a tea cup…

No one said anything about rifles and your life depending on it. I was referring to your stupid watch analogy. And it is stupid.

I do not buy rifles to impress anyone. 99.9% of anyone who picks up any rifle of mine couldn’t tell you what it was or how much it costs. In fact, they garner zero interest. If I was looking to impress someone I’d use some heavy barreled braked chassis laden monstrosity. All topped off with some Hubble type Chinese made scope.

That would raise eyebrows and draw a crowd. Not the Mauser style rifles I prefer. Those impress no one. But they sure make you mad. I don’t post a picture of any rifle on here without your ego jumping in with both feet.

Take your nonsense elsewhere.

What kind of person offers his opinion on everyone else’s rifles but refuses to give any indication of what he uses? Who does that? You apparently.
