Who hates a .270 Winchester?

Nice buck! Thanks for posting it. Great shoulder shot, I bet that hurt, from that great old rifle.
Yeah, i was pleased with that one. (That's the exit wound you can see, 180 grain copper monolithic, hit a little lower than that on the right side, he was slightly above me. Couldn't have expanded much but still demolished the top of the heart.) It was a good hunt, tracked him til about 2 in the afternoon, got my shot, back at the truck by 4:30 as it was getting dim. At one point tracking him i was several miles from the truck but it was one of those lucky situations where the deer started circling and when i caught up with him we were 400 meters from the vehicle. He weighed 180 field-dressed at late season, so i'd bet he was pushing 200 field dressed earlier in the season. Not a monster for the dakotensis subspecies by any means, but a good ol' bushbuck for the hard foothills where they're not getting any tame forage. The rifle is a '57, the peep a modern Skinner out of Montana. Great with a ghost ring for heavy November woods.

Awesome buck! I love that well worn pump gun too
Thanks! The gun's a '57 carbine, original finish (no kidding, he says. ;)). I usually carry a .375 magazine rifle (grizzlies) but i have to admit there is nothing so good as a Remington pump rifle for tracking deer in big woods. I've seen clips of guys cycling them as fast as semi-autos, and they are so trim and light you don't even notice carrying them. They come in .270 too, and would be just as effective i suspect.

Amish machine gun ;)

I like it (6.8 Western) , and you can back off on the PSI and it becomes a very mild mannered cartridge that performs like a big magnum downrange. One of my favorite loads is the 165gr Nosler ABLR over 57.0grs H4831sc @ 2760 fps. This is basically 30-06 performance, but the G1 BC of that bullet is .603 and it holds onto velocity way out there (2000 fps impact @ 600 yards)

To compare, a 30-06 165gr Nosler Partition @ 2800 fps MV, retains 2000 fps to 392 yards, and has 1640 fps at 600 yards)

Factory 6.8 165gr ABLR ammo does 2951 fps MV, which retains 2000 fps to 708 yards. It doesn't shoot near as accurate as my handload though, from my Model 70 Extreme Weather
Years back I had a 270 Ren (300 savage necked down to 270, basically). It was a sweet little rifle, a Savage 99, and I took deer, wolves, moose and bear with it. Really nothing the 7mm-08 doesn't do, but I liked it. - dan

Kinda really want to try that now lol
You can do it about the same with a 308, with both 110 and 130 grainers. Of course you’ll get told it’s not nearly enough bullet.
Best part is you won’t have all the 270 stank to wash off your hands. You will have to wash off 308 stank, but its not nearly as bad! 😀😉

Heh.. some of this chatter towards the .270Win has me thinking back to when (and currently) why I’m clearly not and never will be in the 6.5 Needmore/Manbun camp… Cause there’s some extra stank goin on there 🤣

I love me some of that 6.5 Creed stankkk

So far this season the 110gr 30 cal TTSX is more than enough bullet haha

You're right though, I've been asked why I'd ever want to do that by people with no idea how it performs.

I just like the efficiency of that lil Savage case and the idea of a more aerodynamic 110 even if its only gonna matter between my ears :)

Maybe the 270 has stank baggage, and the 6.5 Crudmore just has metrosexual lumberjack manbun stank?

From a practical standpoint, I'd take a 6.5CM over a 270 any day.

In the end, I'm all gunned up so won't be buying either.
