Does brake cleaner work good for cleaning gun parts? I'm sure people do or have used it. How well does it work? I'm not talking about heavy powder residew, just for getting into the hard to reach areas or the striker assembly were you don't want any oily residew. I'm only asking because I have a bunch of it laying around the garage, and this way it might get used

Ive used brake cleaner for years for cleaning my guns,I usually scrub the gunk loose with a toothbrush and hoppes #9 an then give it a blast with the brake cleaner,works really well.

Just keep it away from wood(I remove the grips from my guns first)and be careful that you have good ventilation.I also always wear gloves and safety goggles(if you ever sprayed yourself in the eye with this stuff,you will know why!)

Also be sure to oil the gun right away as it will be bone dry afterwards and prone to rusting

Yep, brake cleaner (the chlorinated kind, non-flammable on label) works very well for degreasing.

It is identical to "Gun Scrubber" that costs 5x as much.

Best to use a cleaner with acetone. Some brake cleaners have it and most carb cleaners. It cuts through the nitrocellulose residue.

Acetone is pretty brutal on most plastics.

You could also shoot some compressed air through the channel to make sure it's dry after using a solvent.

Some such as Motomaster Brake Cleaner will soften plastic as well as just about any paint or varnish finish.

You would have to check with the manufacturer of your polymer framed gun. Acetone will affect some "plastics" and not others. It all depends on the compounds making up the polymer in the pistol. Acetone is fine for some Glocks for example. But check with the manufacturer before trying it out. If anything, it will probably dissolve any colouring on your sight dots.

Check what is in the brake cleaner. Some are mixes of various solvents such as toluene, xylene, alcohols.....

I like break free also. I use the Powder blast for cleaning something real dirty, did great job on the cosmo on my M14 as well.
