Does brake cleaner work good for cleaning gun parts? I'm sure people do or have used it. How well does it work? I'm not talking about heavy powder residew, just for getting into the hard to reach areas or the striker assembly were you don't want any oily residew. I'm only asking because I have a bunch of it laying around the garage, and this way it might get used ;)

Ive used brake cleaner for years for cleaning my guns,I usually scrub the gunk loose with a toothbrush and hoppes #9 an then give it a blast with the brake cleaner, works really well.

Just keep it away from wood(I remove the grips from my guns first)and be careful that you have good ventilation.I also always wear gloves and safety goggles(if you ever sprayed yourself in the eye with this stuff, you will know why!)

Also be sure to oil the gun right away as it will be bone dry afterwards and prone to rusting

Yep, brake cleaner (the chlorinated kind, non-flammable on label) works very well for degreasing.

It is identical to "Gun Scrubber" that costs 5x as much.

Will it wreck "plastic" guns such as the m&p?

You would have to check with the manufacturer of your polymer framed gun. Acetone will affect some "plastics" and not others. It all depends on the compounds making up the polymer in the pistol. Acetone is fine for some Glocks for example. But check with the manufacturer before trying it out. If anything, it will probably dissolve any colouring on your sight dots.
