I recently injured my shoulder and its likely not going to fully recover. I was at the range the other day and firing the .338 is causing me problems. I have a .308 , a couple SKS' a .223. I have also gotten back into the habit of looking at what is for sale these days. I am looking for a gun/cartridge combo to replace my .338 for moose. I am also really enjoying the spirited long range shooting discussion in this forum. So would like to buy accuracy at the same time for next year at Summerland. Money is not really the issue, but I am thrifty and expect value. I think its time to go with a synthetic stock , maybe stainless and I still have to carry it.

I have some ideas but welcome yours

throback, I love 6.5's do to the high sectionsity which means that a lighter bullet does the same job and recoil is less.

Regards,

Peter

I agree with Peter, I have a 6.5-270 WSM wildcat, using one of Peters 140gn Lapua Naturalis Hunting bullets I get ~ 3000 fps.

The gun is in a light synthetic stock, with a Gaillard bbl, and a Rem 700 action, and muzzle brake, recoil is less than my .223, and I see all my shots hit, no loss of sight picture from the recoil.

I think it sounds like a 7mm rem mag is what the doctor ordered, way less recoil, great long distance capabilites with the berger 168's or accubond 160's, and plenty of power for the moose. another thing to think about would be to put a good break on your 338 and buy some good hearing protection. but I am never apposed to people buying new guns :)

I like the 6.5 idea. I guess its a front runner. I had an old 6.5X55 mauser years ago and learned a bit about its qualities then. 7 mag seems a good choice too, my impression is that it eats a lot of powder.

Alot of choices here. I add my 2c a little off topic. I am feeling recoil a little more these years. Put a good quality recoil pad on your rifle if it doesn't come with one. I never put much thought into a pad until we put a Limbsaver on my brothers 300 WSM. I could not believe the difference in felt (and percieved) recoil. Once I find one for my Ruger M77 (30-06) it's getting Limbsaver brand pad as well and the solid red rubber Ruger pad is coming off.

I don't think the limbsaver will help a whole lot because its the whole concussion and push thing that push the whole shoulder out of whack. But I will check out their site and see what they say , thanks

The .338 is too much for moose anyway. So is any magnum.
A synthetic stock will increase the felt recoil with any cartridge. You may want to look into a .270WSM or the like. Does your .308 with a 165 grain bullet hurt too?
Limbsavers and other recoil reducing devices might help. Mind you, you'd best talk to your doctor before you do anything.
Ever think about bow hunting?

I think the 7mm mag is out. If you have a shoulder problem that's the wrong way to go. I think efficientcy rather than power is the solution. If the .308 feels comfortable with your condition, it might be the solution... especially if you reload.

Again.. just a suggestion. Try and give a gauge on how much your shoulder hurts and when. Maybe that might help.

Sorry to hear about your injury.

Big fan of the 6.5's. Excellent bullets available for long range paper punching, very capable at dropping game and are mild in the recoil dept. I have 3 different 6.5X55's and am having a 260AI built right now. For someone who is recoil sensitive, but wants something to tackle larger game as well I think they are a great option.

Its not too much in grizzly country. But interesting you should mention the 270WSM. I like the Savage 16FSS Bolt Action Rifle in 270WSM. But mainly because I don't see a lot of 6.5's. I don't know much about the 270 wsm really. I'll look into it. It looks like the 150gr is the biggest bullet.

The .308 is just over 5 pounds with a 19 inch barrel for really think stuff. Its OK, but its time for something new. Recoil is OK with it.

a 270 may be a touch light for moose and prone to deflections. A 7mm Mag seems about right.
