Hi, I am loading my 300wm with 75g of H4831 with a 150gn hornady sst (working on a light load for deer) and I was wondering what powder you other guys are using. The powder I am using is good but I dont know if there is something better I should be using.

thanks shooter910

I have been using alliant reloader 22 with good results. (just recently got into reloading). I have been using 180 gr accubonds and 165 Barnes X triple shock bullets. Both have been very accurate in my gun with 75 grains for the X bullets and 73.5 for the 180 accubond. As this is the first powder I have tried, I have little to compare these numbers to. But I have been getting .95 inch groups at 100 yards with the accubonds, and 1.25" groups with the X bullets. I know I need to tweek the loads later, but for hunting, these are more than sufficient for me.

What do you want out of another powder? What is the 4831 not doing for you? Not happy with velocity? Accuracy?

Don't like the smell?:p

Haven't loaded any 150gr.bullets in my 300Win.mag.but I have used 72gr. of H4831(and now H4831SC) behind 180gr.bullets for years with no complaints.

I use 70 grains of IMR 4831 under a 190 grain bullet,it chronies 2930 fps out of a 24 inch barrel.
This isn't a max load and it's very accurate in my rifle. I don't need to go higher as accuracy is more desireable.:sniper:

"...a light load for deer..." A .300 mag is too much gun for any deer. Even Ontario deer. Unless that's the only rifle you have.
It's a powder guzzler, but look at a 130 grain bullet with IMR4064. 64.0 to 68.3. 3217fps to 3427fps.
As a comparison, the .308 Win uses 45.0 to 49.5(compressed) of IMR4064 with a 130 grain bullet and far less felt recoil.

RL-22 or H-4350 works well.
You will find you get a bit more velocity out of rl 22.

My 300 works better with 4350 with rl right behind it. Shoot 180s all the time out of it but 165s were quite accurate as well.

For my Ruger Mark II Sporter 300 WM, I have a good load ;
IMR 4350 67.5 grain,
180 grains Nosler ACCubond.

That load is pretty conservative, but in my gun, chronoed 3017 FPS and 0.5 MOA.

I Like IMR 4350 because you can reload many different cartridges.

GreatMush

this is just the powder that I picked just by looking throught the reload manual and comparing numbers, I like it fine but was wondering if anybody had a better choice for the load.

thanks to all who gave advice some good things to try!!!
thanks

I would not change powder , but WOULD change bullets.
150 grain bullets have thinner jackets in most cases than 200 grain bullets do, resulting in less meat damage on smaller critters like deer.
Typically most 300s also shoot 190 to 210 gr bullets better than the lighter bullets.
Speed is great, but accuracy is deadly.

I've had good success using IMR 4350, not only in this caliber but in a few others as well. That powder with the 180gr Sierra SBT & Sierra's 200gr SBT in the 300wm & the 308 Norma Mag have been some of the best performers for me.
Oh, shooter910, nice Avatar.

I used to use IMR 4831 and 165 gr bullets, but have since switched to IMR 7828 and 180 gr. Hornady IL's. The heavier bullets shoot better for me and don't waste as much meat. Don't go to a 130 gr. bullet, it's a waste of the horsepower you have in the 300 Win. mag. Good luck, Eric

The .300 Winchester Magnum likes a number of different powders, in my experience. The standouts are the usual favourites: Reloder 22, IMR 4350 and 4831, H4831 and H1000, etc.

Each has its own virtues and niche.

The classic load I've found that works in a number of rifles is any decent 180-grain bullet and 73 grains of IMR 4831. This combo always gives excellent velocity and accuracy, and it tends to be the first load I try when playing with a new .300.

For my hunting rifle these days, I've settled upon a slightly more exotic load: 77.5 grains of Vihtavuori N560, out of a Winchester case, ignited by a CCI 250, and pushing a Nosler 180-grain Accubond. My Sako has a short barrel (something like 22.5 inches). In spite of this, I'm getting a solid 3,050 fps over the chronograph and the first three shots land into about an inch at 200 metres. Last November, I absolutely flattened a Muley doe at a lasered 250 yards, with one shot through the spine (shooting down a steep canyon in central BC).

I agree with those who say that a .300 Winchester is a bit much for deer... but it sure works, though! :D

I just finished loading some 180 gn with 71gn of h4831 and now I have to wait till sunday to find out how they shoot.

thanks for all the ideas guys there is a couple of thins there that I am going to try once I get some powder.

For the lighter weight bullets either of the 4350's are good..165gr and up I use Reloader 22.
