Calgary: Remington 597's FOR CHEAP!!

Only one Canadian Tire in Calgary sells the rifles, but they actually have a pretty good selection believe it or not!
That post works for sling swivels OR Harris bipods (as you can see from these pics).

I went down there today to see about getting the rain cheque and it turns out whoever it was I talked was talking out of his ass! They still have some in stock, but not for long I would think. Sorry guys, I just can't plunk down the dough and buy them for all of you, wish you were here to take advantage of this too.
What an incredible buy for $140! Picked up 50 rounds of 3 different ammos to try in the rifle (Winchester PPs, Federal hollow points and CCI stingers). Gotta find a scope for it and see how it shoots gophers as soon as this winter blast goes away.

Hehehe, very nice! Looks eerily familiar however...

I realized later on that I had put the bi-pod on the wrong way...lol...also a Harris. :)

Woohoo!!! I got the last one! I went in to the Canadian Tire on Macleod Trail this afternoon and the fellow in front of me bought two of them, so that left me with the display model.

But for those who missed out, sorry they are not doing rainchecks... :( But the do have a couple dozen more coming in soon, so they may go back on sale.

I picked one up today. The model was w/o irons, w/ synthetic stock and came with a 3-9x scope. The price was so good, I even picked up a 30rd mag.

NICE you got a 30 shot mag eh? I'm trying to hunt one down as I type this (well not literally, but you know what I mean).
LOL ya I've put the bipod on backwards before too... doesn't matter it works both ways.
Man those guys at CT don't know if they're coming or going sometimes! First they tell me over the phone they're sold out, but come get a rain check, then I go and they have lots, now they're sold out and NOT giving rain checks?!?!?!
I'm just glad I got one in the end on sale.

Novan, what kind of ammo does yours like to eat? Are those Stingers you have in that clip?

5th Last One

I was down there at 10 am and picked up the fifth last one.
:)
Thanks for posting about the sale, and updating there were some left.

Have broken it down and cleaned it up and already gotten a list of "improvements" possible; and fixes should something not be right.

Sure seems like it will be a fun lil' plinker.

They're Stingers all right, and they cycle decently.

At first there were a few FTF & FTE issues (Stingers & Win. Target), the 597s notorious for that, but some post-shooting cleaning took care of that; still get the odd FTF though.

Currently I'm working on a brick of Remy subsonic HPs and even though their some dirty ammo, they shoot pretty good.

Shoot well!

Nope, I don't know of any Canadian Tires in Manitoba that carry .22's or larger. I don't really look anymore though. If anyone knows of where I could pick one up in Manitoba I'm really interested. My girlfriend wants a .22 but wants the stock in black or real wood (her only requests). I wanted her to get a 597 but I thought they only came in that carbon crap.

Take your bike out to Kenora. The last time I was at that CT it had a larger gun selection than any store in Wpg. I kid thee not.

I've broken mine down and cleaned too, except I didn't have a hex key small enough to take out the rails and clean them up... or an inch lbs torque wrench to put it back together afterwards. 10 to 12 inch lbs? wow, but I've heard it's really important to make sure you don't get them in too loose or accuracy is really thrown off.

What improvements have you found, Findal? I haven't done any digging yet, but if you're willing to share I'll take it.

re: Improvements possible?

While cruising around the net I found that the 597 sometimes has issues and possibly a few things that tinkering can help to the betterment of accuracy and reliability.
After searching the forums here; Rimfire Central in the Remington section is a good place to start looking.

These things are mainly to do with the trigger group and reciever/action.
Things like:
Trigger Pull lightening with the VQ replacement trigger or some judicous stoning and/or polishing of the trigger.
Trigger spring reversal.
Trigger 'bushing' thinning or polishing.
The rail tension and adjustment as well as polishing and lubrication.
The firing pin can be made a bit smoother in action.
The auto action can be lightened and lengthened to allow lower power ammo use(subsonics).
Ejector pin and grove truing.
Ejector pin VQ upgrade.
Auto-open on last shot mechanism removal or spring fixing.
Trigger Stop.
Magazine tinkering for reliability and full capacity use.
Stock deadening with expandable foam.

There were a bunch of the things that this model has possible issues with(like any gun) and the simple fixes or adjustments possible make it easy to tinker with, if you are so inclined and safe enough to do so.
