I bought a pre 81 BLR off of the EE, and wow what a beauty.
Topped it with a 1-4 Leupy (also bought from the EE)
I've tried 200 gr. Hornady SP's,200gr. Remington bulk, 225gr. Sierra BT's, 225gr. Nosler Partion's. and 250gr. Speer SP's. have'nt found one that would'nt shoot into less than 1.25", I often have the first couple shots actually touching on over 75% of the groups.
For on game performance I've only taken 3 crittters with it.
One was a 6' 3" black bear over bait at 50yds, with a 225gr. Sierra, a forward shoulder shot smashed the near side shoulder, broke the neck and exited in front of the off side shoulder, the bear just sort of nosed in right then and there.
The second was a nice fat whitetail doe at about 60yds, I passed on a head shot and drilled her in the lungs as she quartered away, and was look back at me over her shoulder. The Hornady 200gr. SP broke 3 ribs on the way in (sharp angle) and exited below the scapula on the far side. She went about 40yds leaving a good blood trail for the latter half of her to dead to know it run. Was pretty much able to eat right up to the bullet hole on the off side.
The third one was this year Whitetail buck, he got it from a tree stand at about 50yds, he walked in with his nose in the ground and faceing quartering on. I had a small hole in the alders which allowed me to put one into his neck just aft of the axis bone, he droped like a sack of spuds, and leaked like a flountain, from the 200gr. Hornady SP.
I sight in about 3" high at 100yds, that puts me zero for 200yds, and left with a top of the back hold at 250yds.
The 358Win. is a very under appreciated cartridge IMO, and the fact that you never see a whole lot of them for sale may give testiment to their like by hunters.
