358 blr????

I have one. It has accounted for two deer and a moose in the past 3 years. Only caution I have is if you reload, stay away from the 225g sierra boat tail. They dont seem to hold together. I recommend the 225g Partitions.

I make a short range squib load for it too, 158gHP pistol bullet and a little fast shotgun powder. One of the benefits for the 358 is the abundance of cheap pistol bullets. Fun around the farm!

The 358's a good thumper with 250s on bear and moose. Here's my BLR in 358.

You can read an article titled "BLR .358 Winchester" linked on my articles page here (other 358 articles too) - http://www.35cal.com/articles.html
As slapshot mentioned it's basically a reloaders cartridge as there is only one 200gr factory offering in short supply and which is usually mucho $$$$$$$$.
If you want to see a few loads I've used you can go here - http://www.35cal.com/loading.html#blr
Like Slapshot I distrust the 225 Sierras though there are lots who love em for hunting. I prefer the 225 Partition or better a 250. Fellow CGNer "Why Not" has elsewhere reported that his friend Bert has killed everything big game in the Yukon I think with his 358 using 250Speers at 2200 I believe. It just plain works. I'm not sure if Bert's rifle is a BLR.
Some have loaded 358s for long range use too to over 300yds capabilty using 180X bullets (though not made any more) at 2930MV!

I've got one in the TD version...shoots nice, good thumper..nice powerful package. It's been for sale in the EE if interested. I have a great time shooting the 150y gong with it with iron sights and watch that thing swing around after it's been hammered with a 250g. Definatly makes the guys shooting the same gong with a 30-06 take notice...:D

I have it's twin, the .356 W. and it's deadly with 250gr. cast flat points, flatter shooting then my 45/70s. I don't, however care much for the BLR as we see alot in the shop for repairs, gears are NFG, a rifles no place for gears anyhow.

I bought a pre 81 BLR off of the EE, and wow what a beauty.
Topped it with a 1-4 Leupy (also bought from the EE)

I've tried 200 gr. Hornady SP's,200gr. Remington bulk, 225gr. Sierra BT's, 225gr. Nosler Partion's. and 250gr. Speer SP's. have'nt found one that would'nt shoot into less than 1.25", I often have the first couple shots actually touching on over 75% of the groups.

For on game performance I've only taken 3 crittters with it.

One was a 6' 3" black bear over bait at 50yds, with a 225gr. Sierra, a forward shoulder shot smashed the near side shoulder, broke the neck and exited in front of the off side shoulder, the bear just sort of nosed in right then and there.

The second was a nice fat whitetail doe at about 60yds, I passed on a head shot and drilled her in the lungs as she quartered away, and was look back at me over her shoulder. The Hornady 200gr. SP broke 3 ribs on the way in (sharp angle) and exited below the scapula on the far side. She went about 40yds leaving a good blood trail for the latter half of her to dead to know it run. Was pretty much able to eat right up to the bullet hole on the off side.

The third one was this year Whitetail buck, he got it from a tree stand at about 50yds, he walked in with his nose in the ground and faceing quartering on. I had a small hole in the alders which allowed me to put one into his neck just aft of the axis bone, he droped like a sack of spuds, and leaked like a flountain, from the 200gr. Hornady SP.

I sight in about 3" high at 100yds, that puts me zero for 200yds, and left with a top of the back hold at 250yds.

The 358Win. is a very under appreciated cartridge IMO, and the fact that you never see a whole lot of them for sale may give testiment to their like by hunters.
