Splitting the brass

I purchased an SKS of another CGN member about 2 weeks ago. When I try to fire the rifle it cracks the brass and does not cycle. It does fire and the action does remain closed.

It is a Chinese SKS, I tried the .223 ammo provided by the seller and ammo I had purchased. I have only shot TOTAL 3 rounds and have put it in the corner until I can solve the problem. It blew all three casings in relatively the same spot in the same manner. I figure it’s not an ammo problem and more than likely a headspace problem. I tried 2 shots after I had got it home, then I tried another shot a few days ago after I gave it a real through cleaning. After each shot the bolt did not cycle and I had to remove the shell with some effort, handy having a removal tool with you.

Is there any way for me to check the head space with out buying the headspace tool, or with out taking it to a gunsmith and getting repairs done for more than what I paid for the rifle?
Or could the problem be a pinned barrel, I’ve been too busy to check in the past week, but I will try today.

The seller has assured me that he provided me the exact ammo that he was previously using, and it was working fine before he sold it to me.

Well, then I do look like an ass for useing the wrong ammo.

that being said, any one have some surp any where?

7.62 x 39 is a pretty common round. Should be at almost any ammo store commercially. Surplus always depends on the shipments.

If I were you I would be leaving some negative feedback for the moron who sold you the rifle and ammo. You are very lucky all that happened was some cracked cases! Any gunstore will have a small stash of 7.62x39mm ammo, should be about 6 bucks for a box of 20 Czech corrosive rounds on stripper clips.

Why? One of the things you get tested on with your PAL is to always check what the firearm is chambered for, and ensure that you are using the correct ammunition.

You know about head-space, but not about matching rifle caliber with ammo caliber? :slap: Never take someone else's word regarding firearms, always double check yourself. It's basic gun safety...

Now for your ammo need, look at our advertisers at the top of the page. Marstar and Canada ammo have what you need in 7,62X39. If you buy surplus ammo like the Czech stuff, it's corrosive, so you need to take special care during cleaning. I use an ammonia based glass cleaner my self. For a more detailed explanation and other cleaning ideas, do a quick search, I'm sure you'll find lots of useful stuff as most SKS related topics have been well covered before.

Stay safe...
