Ruger, piece of sh!t or just me???? Letter sent to Ruger, saga continues.

I just took the Volquartzen *Hi-perf* trigger assembly out of my 10/22 and put the stock trigger stuff back in. My safety wouldn't work and I was still getting "fail to fire" issues.
I'm trying yet another brand of ammo and we'll see if it does better. Somehow I doubt it will. I do own another Ruger, a bolt gun in .204 and its a keeper. Ruger M77 Mk II *Target* in .204 with a 26" 1 in 12 heavy barrel. Trigger like glass, low recoil, and trouser wetting visual results on gophers.
:sniper:
If I hadn't bought the 10/22, I'd be on the hunt for another Squires Bingham model 20 .22LR. I still have the one I bought new in '86....still works like a charm after 10s of thousands of rounds through it.

Check out the Savage Mark II - BTVS (.22LR); Savage Model 93 BTVSS (.22Mag) (my favorite) and Savage Model 93R17-BTVS (.17HMR). I guarantee you will love all of 'em - inside a quarter at 100 yds with Eley .22LR.

anyway, back to the 10/22.
they are over-rated, over-priced pieces of junk!
I have not seen ONE semi-auto 22 that is worth the money asked for.

Well, I must be lucky because I haven't had any trouble with mine... the only part that gave me trouble was the extractor. $10 later it's as reliable as I could wish.

Have you tried the Browning Auto? haven't any issue with mine and it will feed reliably for at least 500rds... then I have to take a 2 minutes break to wipe/oil the action...

thebigbully,

I think you'll love the CZ, they are great rifle... but if you want to shoot gophers @ 100Y, you might want to have a look at something in 17HMR or in .223

i have the TC R55 all weather in stainless and it is a tackdriver right out of the box. as for rugers, the 10/22
is a plinker IMHO, i've had 4 of them. as for Ruger
waranty, they will bend over backwards if u go about it
in a civilized way. they warantyed one for me on a model
that they no longer made. i was told to pick any model
in any calber i wanted. speak softly and carry a big stick.

Millions of Ruger 10-22's sold, dozens of fan sites, and a huge aftermarket industry.... Ummm. I think it's safe to say that it's just you.

No, actually he is right. The above doesn't mean the 10/22 is a good gun, it just means they pulled off the most brillant marketing ploy in history.

Think about it....it's amazing. Could you imagine a car marketed that way?

"Introducing the new Ford Couldbe GT, sure...it doesn't perform nearly as well as the other guy's lesser priced cars, *but* there are all kinds of parts you can buy (at even more $$) that will make it perform pretty close to the cheaper guys, and besides: It's cool to own one!"
"The New Couldbe GT...for those who believe it's cool to waste money"

LOL...I've owned em....somewhere around 10 have passed through my hands...and yes, they are crap. (But you can spend a ####load of money and make them as good as the Benchmark/Buckmark/marlins though! :) )Some of us refer to the 10/22 fad followers as "the lemmings"...blindly following.
I do have an open mind, so convince me: What can the 10/22 do that the other semi's cant do better? One rule: You are not allowed to answer with anything that requires buying parts. Why the hell would I drop 300 on a brand new rifle ust to have to go buy more parts?

The way I see it:
Accuracy: average to sub par compared to the others
Features: +1 for the rotary mag, -5 for no last-shot hold open
Value: Costs more than a 597, isn't as accurate or reliable, and boith have high-cap mags available.

I seriously don't get it....but thats marketing for ya :)

Wrong Way, come on man, let's make more negatives about stock 10/22s...

-5 tricky bolt stop that you have to finangle one way to hold open, then another way to close. I saw a guy at the range poking a screw driver into his action trying to figure out how to "fix" his broken bolt when he took it out for the first time.

-for 5 the stock magazine release... after i got my 10/22 in November, I took it out to the range. I could only fire about 100 shots before my semi-frozen fingers couldn't eject the mags anymore.

-10 stock extractor. maybe you'll get a good one, maybe not but no two will be the same. stovepipes galore.

-5 cheap aluminum receiver. If you free float the barrel all the way to the receiver, you'll eventually bend it and get the 10/22 barrel droop

-5 cheap aluminum black paint on the receiver. I wanted mine silver anyways but I can see how that'd bug some people

-20 for the stock 6 pound trigger

The stock 10/22 really is a piece of crap. I would never go back. Especially because to fix all that and turn it into the most fun rimfire I've ever shot, it cost about 60 bucks and a couple of hours of getting to know my gun better.

My theory is that Ruger knows they could change the design and fix most of these annoyances at a small cost to the end buyer but they've got a good thing going and lots of people have as much fun customizing them as they do shooting.

For someone who wants to shoot a bit of rimfire or maybe use it for the odd gopher, there's no reason to want a 10/22 or justify wanting a 10/22. If you want to shoot long range rimfire at the range, get a 452 or an HMR. If you really want to shoot some semi-auto rimfire but you also want to spend as little as possible on the gun, get a 597 for 159.99 and go have fun, no reason to spend 100 more on the 10/22. If you've got a little more money and don't mind getting in there, there's no other gun I'd recommend.

I personally don't believe that the factory stock 10/22 can do anything better than the other semi-auto 22's that are out there, but that doesn't make it a piece of sh!t. It's a $200 gun that goes bang when you pull the trigger - same as other similarily priced semi's. As an added bonus (for me at least) is Ruger's rotary magazine that allows you to have 10 rounds in a magazine that sits flush to the receiver.

This thread is stupid. I'm sure there are better designed factory stock semi auto's out there today than the old Ruger 10-22 design and if all you want is a factory stock rifle then they would probably be a better choice for you. If you want to upgrade your rifle to superb accuracy or just like customizing your own gun, then the Ruger is probably the easiest path to take.

Cripes - it's not like people are forcing you onto this bandwagon.

10/22 gone downhill?

I had a 10/22 I did to the nines back in 1990 and NEVER had a lick of trouble. I feel for you guys/gals that are, but can't relate. Fired thousands of rounds back then and loved the thing. I've got a bunch of "big boy" toys now and was considering buying a 10/22 for nostalgia, but now I'm not sure...

Well, it went to the range with a 6-24x40 Tasco on it. BIG mistake..I thought the very low recoil of a .22 wouldn't affect a cheap scope. WRONG...
4 inch groups at 50 yrds. Went back two nights later with an old Burris 3-9x40 and it immediately shot 1 inch groups at fifty yrds.
I feel this is as good as its going to get with my 10/22. Completely stock other than the Volquartzen mag release and Volquartzen bolt holder open thingy.
Used the Federal "Valu-pak" HP stuff and still got a bunch of fail to fires as well as fail to extracts.
This gun may or may not go with me on the 4 day gopher safari in a couple of weeks. (More than likely not)
