Epps had a couple when I was there about a week ago. Judging from a distance, the stock on one appeared to be refinished but both seemed to be in good shape.

wandering zero is fiction. Heavy recoil from a #5? ? I guess it is all in what you compare it to. It is heavier than a #4 or #1 .

I almost bought a Jungle Carbine a few years ago for $200 in mint condition with a #1 bolthead.

I think my eagerness to give the guy his first offer made him think it was worth a lot more.

I never did get it.

I just sold one a month or so ago, and it was a decent little rifle. They do have more kick than a regular LE (IMHO), but it was pretty acurate all things considered.

Watch for those little * stamps on the barrel near the receiver, I'm pretty sure that means the bore had rust in it (someone correct me if I'm out to lunch)

I dunno....I can fire my No 4's lots comfortably, but 5 rounds from a JC and it's not fun anymore...

Don't want to sound like a wimp...I bought a slip over buttpad for my JC, made it a lot more pleasant to use.

Putting a slip on pad on a JC is like putting a paper bag on Shania........

Huh? Since when is replacing a cracked rubber buttpad with a modern reproduction considered bubbaing the rifle? They are an exact replacement for a worn part that is next to impossible to replace with an original.

The original buttpad can always be kept for the "collector status" but the replacements sold by Numrich are actually supposed to be a little softer for recoil from what I've heard on the US forums.

I think the hardest thing to find on a #5 is a butt stock of correct length. All the ones I have seen were two inches too short for me to shoot comfotably.

I doubt very much if the powers that be in England at the time were the least bit concerned about the effect of recoil on a British Tommy's shoulder. The pads were likely installed to protect the butt from damage from the floor of troop carriers, aircraft, etc. Perhaps to protect the floor of aircraft from the rifle butts.

- you could always just swap out for #4 butts, if you're not concerned about it being a 'proper' #5 butt.

How do they compare to the mosin m38 or m44 for kick? I'm assuming their butt plate is skinnier... but it's also missing that lovely mosin steel butt plate edge I've come to know and love

I wouldn't know H Wally but I didn't really mind the recoil of the #5 MK 1. I think people should get some perspective and shoot something like a .300 Winchester Magnum sporter and come back to the #5 MK 1, fire it again and then tell us whether they 'kick'.

Recpoil is whatever.

Yes it recoils more than a SMLE with full wood, because it is lighter, but the JC is not a dangerous gun to fire. It's a pussycat compared tp many other rifles..
