After reading several threads on this site, I understand that freefloat Quad rails on AR's are the best option, but I don't understand how they work, or what makes them better, could someone clear this up for me? What are the specific advantages and disadvantages?

Free floats mount to the receiver and do not contact the barrel. Any pressure on the barrel (sling, vertical grip, etc) will change your point of impact on a non free floated.

Okay, suddenly it makes sense. So mounting a freefloat quad rail on your rifle basically makes the barrel freefloat as well? but still, something that only attatches to the receiver seems like it might be fragile. What are the disadvantages?

Fragile ?

Not fragile - look at what its mounted to - the same thing as the barrel -
Disadvantages - cost more money
Advantages - many:):)

There was an article on a subject in firearms review a few months back, autor specifically tested AR in factory configuration and free floated to demonstarate how accuracy changed with a few more bucks invested.

I was never concerned with the money, I'm a no-hook sapper living in the shacks, what else do I have to spend my money on?:D

I guess it just didn't click in my head that free float rails meant a freefloat barrel. Thanks for the clarification.

It's called a freefloat quad because the barrel becomes free-floating when it loses contact with the muzzle end of the handguard.
