How much FT/lb we need at the impact to kill a moose...??

many many many moose taken by myself with the O'conner special..lol .270 and watched a fair amount get tipped over by 7mm rem mag, 30-06, 300 wm,.338 wm, .350 rem mag..
Most all were shot facing sideways and hit in the lungs..and took EXACTLY one minute and 29 seconds to have their lungs fill with blood and collapse..
Second shots usually just caused the moose to attempt to move off..I see no difference in all those calibers..as the ONLY moose I seen DROPPED on the spot I hit too high with a 150 grain nosler from my .270 that spined the moose and it dropped with LITERALLY its 4 feet in the air..

the largest moose I have shot was on the Teslin river and he was HUGE and old in excess of 1500 pound Alaskan giant..2 shots from the .270 and 150 Nosler handload and the moose was down....

And yes I watched a native lady harvest her moose with a 30-30 from 50 paces.. almost a minute and a half later..it too sucumbed to the effects of blood loss and dropped..

As many have pointed out it doesn't take that much in the way of energy to kill a moose or any big game animal for that matter. My Grandfather used a 25-35, he spined them all or hump shot as was the term the old folks used.
Elk are structurally no different than a moose and die in the same amount of time from the same bullet wound. It's what they do in that time that makes them different from the moose, herd animals stick together, that is hard wired into the critter. As the herd bolts from the sound of the shot so does the hit elk and in the 90 seconds they can cover a fair bit of distance trying to keep with the herd.
Or they stand there and look at you or go back to eating and fall over like a moose as I've seen a couple do.

I have only taken two moose with the 300ultramag,but both were on the ground in less than ten seconds using lungshots.

In medium type calibers you need 1800ft/lbs. minimum on the impact.

So according to you a 308 win using standard 180gr Remington Core lockets is only a good for just over 100 yards and after that its not potent enough.

Energy (ft-lbs)
100 yards = 2066
200 yards = 1527

I killed my first black bear at just under 200 yards with my mighty 30/30. One poke in the chest, a short run, then lights out.

I just ran the down range ballistics and came up with a bit over 700ftlbs!
It never occurred to me that I didn't have enough power to get the job done.

Though I wouldn't try it again it shows how lethal slow moving bullets can be.

One shot close to the spine, drops a moose like it had been hit by a truck.
The 30-30 strikes again. (you guys must be tired of this pic)

For this moose season, i have replaced my 300 win mag for a 338 lapua with naturalis ammo, moose are human eater so you better take care lolll

Nah, 300 win mag give me 9 mooses in 11 years, ALWAYS fall in their track but since they are cutting all the wood where i hunt, we need to reach them more far... the nearest shoot was 285 yards....

Hunting is NOT catch and release, this is fishing...

On the opening, i understand, but this one was the very last hunting day after 2 week in the bush..., a Sunday before it close, if you look carefuly, i was leaving, i have shoes in my feet, shirt and nice pant, no hunting cloth !!! i NEVER EVER shoot femeal or veal in my young, 11 years of hunt, only BUCK, that what i have learned from my uncle, the smalest i have shoot before this one was 49 inches rack...

To me, if you don't shoot a small buck like that on the VERY LAST day, there is 2 reason, you hunt only for driking beer with your buddy or you just don't whant to have your hand dirty...wich is not my case !!!

But hey, i have moose meal in my fridge...

Respetcfully

if you can get close enough 10 rounds of .22LR to the lungs will drop one not DRT but it will put it on the ground

any decent chartridge you'd use for deer will pretty much do it's job if you do yours

Calf and bull and sow are the tems that describe child males and femails buck and veal are white tail and cattle tearms as far as i have been expossed to

There are many "immature only" bull moose region in BC. It has been that way for many years.

Sendero - Eight +49" bulls in 11 years? That is pretty impressive! It is nice to see that you take your little boy hunting with you.

Hell, with that size animal we release them, throw them back and let them grow up!

Moose hunting is very tough here in la belle province. Outside of the Gaspé area where moose abound and cost thousands to hunt, they're very heavily hunted everywhere else. Moose this young is commonly shot. There is no tag system here, so anyone can buy a license and hunt in any zone they want. That's roughly 100,000 hunters taking to the woods each fall where an average of 10,000 or so are shot.

Woodsman, that is tough hunting you describe! I did not want, or intend, to critize, or belittle, anyones hunting, or hunting style, or what size animal they shot. I was merely trying to have a little fun.
However, on these threads that is not an easy thing to do, because people always take you seriously and think the worst.
I just wish people could loosen up a bit, enjoy a joke and have some fun.

Can anyone tell me the caliber Johnny Canuck was using in his last pic? Man-o-Man the energy impact to blow that moose into the trees.......simply awesome. I bet the recoil would be too much for me!:D

Thanks my friend for all your comments... As I understood, A well placed bullet is better than of intergallatic bullet that is misplaced... But the question was for my friend that was worrying about is 308 and long range... Cause Is cousin says that he shot a moose every year with standard cartridge at more than 300yard with is .308.

So thanks you very much for your answers
