Range days at the farm

So I got to spend a couple of days at the farm with my 308 Win and a "gramp's made" steel gong at 427, 476 and 683 yards. This is the first time I've worked over this Bushnell 3200 10x and my 175SMK drop chart. I was also here to focus on doping the wind: 4-6 km winds at 60 degrees with 10-12 km gusts. Shooting only minute-of-gong, everything worked flawlessly and I was having too much fun. The first group was the 10 shots at 427 yards followed up by 5 shots at 476 yards - 15/15 hits. Then came 30 rounds fired at 683 yards without wind flags, with the day ending with 23/30 hits. The next day I set up three, 24" flagging tape wind flags downrange and carefully watched the wind to put 14/15 rounds (missed the 2nd shot by firing during a gust) into the gong at 683 yards. You can guess the ranges by the bullet impact on the gong, with the 683 yard hits barely making a mark, although always ringing the gong loud and clear. Overall, just a great session with my trusty .308 Win.

Looks like you caught the bug. Congrats.

That looks like a superb place to shoot too. How far is the treeline to treeline?

My guess is that a few more sessions and the gong is going to shrink. Size them to MOA or less and it will become very challenging. Will look nearly impossible at the beginning but after a bit, will be ringing those too.

I love pounding rocks and gongs WAY more then punching paper. Guess instant gratification is part of it.

Welcome to a most addictive form of shooting and nice looking rig. Where abouts are you?

Jerry

I've never had the opportunity to shoot out past 300 yards, so for me, that scene would be a dream come true! Glad you had fun and definitely good shooting!

What a great situation! Wanted to get down and shoot as soon as I saw the setup. What's the mirage like across all that grass? fred

1/2 mile/880 yards or thereabouts. One of our neighbors has a full mile of clear land across a shallow valley that should go easily 1500 yards of clear line of sight - gotta stop in for a coffee with my .338 LM one of these days :welcome::sniper:.....

The beauty of the 3200 scope is that it is limited to 10x, where mirage is pretty much negligible:D.
