Question: Barrel Lengths

I am thinking of buying this gun

It has a four inch barrel which when converted to mm's is just barely over the 105mm classification of prohibited. Is this something I will run into any problems with? Should I contact my local firearms advisor or will this not be a problem at all? Thanks.



EDIT: WHoops I messed up the converstion, 4 inches is classified as prohibited, Mods can delete :(

"...I messed up..." Just a bit. The Canadian legal barrel length is whatever the manufacturer says it is. The actual length doesn't matter.
There are lots of 6" .22 revolvers available though.

I don't think this entirely true, I can think of at least one personal example where CFC considered their prescribed form of measure more valid than the manufacurer's measure, ie. H&K P7 - H&K says it's 105 mm, while CFC includes measurement from breech face to muzzle tip and hence it magically becomes non prohibited at 106.56 mm.

G'waaat? That is dangerously incorrect. If it isn't already in the system, the verifiers 'course' and the RCMP are clear on how to record a barrel length. The length of the barrel is what it is. This pistol as said above, is already in the system, Prohib. 12(6).

So this means that any handgun which is advertised as 4" is prohibited??

This would mean that almost all standard size Sig, Glock, Beretta and Springfields are prohibited because they are advertised as a 4" handgun.

Monday I am gonna contact CFC and find out if that is correct because it would severely limit which handguns we can use for sport shooting and they are almost all the same, so in essence it would be discrimination against some handguns which won't fit in a pocket but they don't want people to use.

I will let ya guys know what the CFC tells me.

save yourself the time, and effort. 4 inches or less= prohib.... if it has a quarter inch added onto the length, it is magically no longer a threat of concealment. :runaway:
there are still alot of cool things with 4.25 inch barrels, bigger.

Yeah possibly but most guns are 4" and up and there are more guns starting with 4" barrels then there is with 4 ¼" barrel length, I am looking into writing a bill to change the prohibited length to 100 mm or less because the difference between 4" and 4 ¼" is only 3.4mm according to my calculations which is utter BS.

But I will let ya guys know how that goes because right now I am reading the specific laws to get myself more knowledable into the whole subject of writing bills.

Be sure to keep us posted...:D..Maybe go for increasing magazine limts while your at it...The difference between a 10 and 15 round mag is only 5 rounds.

Crap I am sick and my brain isn't working properly right now but what I was calculating was actually the distance in mm between 4" and the magical prohibited mark where all guns go from the slavery of prohibited status to the happy run around land of restricted little weapons. and I was still wrong because 105mm is still prohibited so I should have calculated 105.1-101.6 which becomes 3.5mm or 0.35cm but I gotto go and eat so I will feel better but thanks for showing me my screw up, I shouldn't be posting on my computer while sick because I read it and I didn't even know what the hell I was doing. :bangHead:

Do you not understand gun politics? They want to ban as many guns as possible, so they start by banning the most common feature of a handgun, which is it's short barrel length compared to a long gun.

.25 and .32 calibers are also banned ( prohib )

Well I am gonna try to research the laws that we have now and that we have had before so I have some meat on my bones and then talk to my MP and see if she will back me up because that is in essence why we have MPs, for them to assist us in matters we have regarding parliamentary issues.

Both my computers are presently out of service so I have to go to the library with 95% french material and 5% english material so not sure if I can find anything here but if I don't then I can always visit the law library at my University and do all my research there.

OK then try this one, a model 10 .38 S & W revolver barrel is measured from the forcing cone, or rather the front of the cylinder, to the end of the barrel...4"
NOT INCLUDING THE CYLINDER (Chamber) but a pistol includes the chamber. If you just got that fixed first then you could free up all kinds of guns!!!

My friend has an old Taurus .38 spl and it's 4inch so he needs to have it destroyed.

Is there some way of saving it? Can you just change the barrel?
