Hi all,
What are the pros and cons of the two stock designs - traditional straight and pistolgrip - for shooting. I am looking for opinions/comparisons for shooting, cycling etc. I've fired a couple of rounds out of both styles in the Marlin 45-70 but really didn't pay attention at the time to the differences.
What are your opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of each as far as shooting the guns go? Does one shoulder better, or one beat up your knuckles more? etc

Thanks and Cheers

I find the pistol grip a bit more comfortable and allows for better trigger squeeze. Not real important in a lever rifle usually.
The straight grip, IMHO, gives a rifle "pointability". I've never seen a rifle point faster than a Win 94 carbine. Nothing.

I like the look and feel of a straight grip, allthough I think the pistol grip configuration helps with recoil in the bigger calibers.

I prefer the curved pistol grip-straight stock just looks uncomfortable to me. I prefer the lines too of a curved grip. Just looks better to me is all-my $0.02

Thanks guys,
I got to play with a couple of Marlins the other day, one pistol grip and a straight to compare.

I found I prefer the feel of the pistol grip and curved lever if I took the time to think about it, but I instinctively bring the straight style ot my shoulder much better. Levers didn't bash my hand on either even with hot loads. I've fired Camp Cook's hot loads previously and didn't have a problem then either, I am not recoil sensitive at all but CC's hot loads are nasty!

So in the end I just went with my first instinct and have a Guide Gun on the way thanks to Frontier :) I can't believe I waited this long to get one.
Cheers

I hear you :) all guns are addictive
I already have a Savage 99 so I'm not a complete lever newbie ;)

Cheers

Addiction no kidding ... 10 in two years. Looking at 1873 Winchester can't decide short rifle or sporting. Have Henry on order been that way since march.
