Do bears growl? They always growled on Walt Disney, then they once showed a fellow retiring who was the voice of the growling bears!
No, I think we can safely say that bears don't growl. Except, as someone has mentioned, they give the big, drawn out moan, as they die. I have heard it from rifle shot ones, but is common with a bear hit with an arrow. If we hit a bear with an arrow we would listen carefully. When you heard the big moan, just go to where the sound came from.

I must bow to and am totally humbled by those that have so many bear experiences in remote wilderness areas I had no idea that so many spent most of their lives in remote wilderness areas.

Never said the bear was acting dangerously said "did it act like this one" when I posted the link.

The first 9-10 minutes of the video was us messing around when we finally spotted the bear after that I recorded another 21-22 minutes of of it.

My Sony HDD video camera will only film 31 minutes then it jumps to another clip.

So the first clip is 31 minutes and I can't figure out how to or care to edit it or post a 31 minute video clip on Youtube my account only allows 10 minute clips max.

At least some here can posted links/pictures to actually prove that they ever get out of their parents basements.

So my choice of words is troubling to some isn't it a shame that not one of you didn't try and correct me on the bear wasn't snapping it's jaws it was actually more like popping them.

Thats right most of you probably haven't heard them making that kind of noise either...

Yes but your fear and dialogue in the video itself sure led everyone to believe you were faced with a dangerous situation. I don't blame people with little experience around bears for being extra cautious or in your case, fearful, I was just pointing out that your encounter was nothing more than a bear nervously eating on the side of the road. Let's not try to make it any more....okay? If loading guns and giving a Capstick-like dialogue is your way of dealing with bears far be it for me to criticize but it still don't make it so. If you'll notice in the video I posted that Vanessa didn't even pick her rifle up which indicates her comfort level around bears, unlike you who made a point of not only loading but quoting ballistics which shows your comfort level. Not saying either is right or wrong and each must react according to their experience and comfort but from someone that has a lot of experience with bears, I'm just trying to point out that you were definitely not in danger with that bear nor were the the cowboy tactics with the loaded firearms on the atv required. Just some friendly advice for next time. The more time you spend around bears, the more you'll learn to read them but portraying an encounter like that as you did does not do anyone any good. Either you have very little experience with bears or were over acting for the camera but neither does much to help others understand bears.

Your feeble attempts just don't cut it...

Amazing and good humour...

Here is a count comparison...

In BC we have over 1/2 of Canada's black bear population with a count of far more than 200,000 we also have about 20,000 grizzlies.

Camp...your abilility to talk about things you know nothing about never ceases to amaze me. BC may have 30% of of Canada's esimated 443,000 bears but definitely not half and definitely not 200,000. Your grizzly bear numbers are only about a 100% exaggeration as well. I have a couple friends that are prone to exaggeration and I just divide all their claims by two and it seems to work well.......think I'll just do the same with you. Think I'll call it the Camp Cook factor.

Not sure about the number in Canada, but most of the figures for black bears recently have been in the 170 000-200 000 level (or more) , and grizzlies in about 20 00 (or more)

Eco -weenies woudl like you to believe that black and grizzly bears are almost extinct in BC, but both bear populations have been growing like crazy in the last few years. I don't need a report or biologist to tell me what I see with my own eyes.
:)

Looked mostly curious to me. Still - can't be too sure. It doesn't hurt to put the fear of man into 'em at a young age, that's for sure :)
I attempted to do just that with a small bear at a dump a few years back. He cut me off from my Jeep, and was sitting eating garbage.
No way around him, due to fences, and a contractors trailer, so I picked up a chunk of charcoal briquette, and fired it off at the bears shoulder.
Not being very good with briquettes, I beaned him, very heavily in the muzzle. I actually heard the impact.
He rubbed his face with a paw, and ignored me!
He only moved when another car came in.
I had squeezed around to the other side of my Jeep by then.
This bear was quite small, maybe 100 lbs. Tough little bugger.

Gatehouse....not trying to say there aren't plenty of bears in BC because there are......just that the numbers are not that high. Determining accurate bear populations and tracking population trends is somewhat like hearding cats....it's nearly impossible but I'd say both your numbers are inflated. The most recently believable numbers that I've seen would peg black bear populations around 120-160k and grizzlies 10-13k. Still plenty of bears no matter how you look at it.

Wildlife populations are always difficult to track but most of the numbers you are quoting are from studies of about 10 years ago..

Bear populations have been growing rapidly in most of BC, especially in the last few years. Regardless of the exact numbers, it is a rarity to go off the pavement anywhere in BC and NOT see a bear these days. We counted 12 in a single small field recently.

Actually the numbers I'm quoting are a result of tracking population trends for nearly 100 years and applying those trends to a population study done in 1999 and extrapilating the current populations. Not as accurate as counting each bear but more accurate than anecdotal evidence. My point being, there are lots of bears in BC.......just not 1/2 of Canada's population. In truth, the 443k number is a bit dated and may well be closer to 500k. I haven't seen the research on those trends but suspect they somewhat mirror what's going on in BC.

well Ill take Clarkes side here its close to the 200K mark, many times plot countig is done, not totaly acurate obviously but close nuff and is widly accepted in all forms of counting and I put on average 1200Km a day on back roads and highways in BC and I can say that its not uncommon to see a dozen bears on highway and 2-3 dozen in the bush (yes some may be same bears from day to day and trip to trip but if I see say 12 bears in 48kms of bush road thats 1 bear for every 4kms BC being 944735 square kms that would be 236183 bears plotted in BC now take out the cities etc and you are down to the 170K + number

gatehouse and bone collector are right I just googled it and the april 2008 estimates are : 18,000 + grizzlies , and 160,000 + black bears , and growing exponentially, complete with pictures of multiple grizz walking down a highway, and so on , also it said that BC has roughly 1/4 of all the blackbears in canada and didn't find anything on the percentage of grizz in bc compared to rest of it's canadian range :)

Sheepherder I must apologize that it took me so long to remember who you and your buddy are, I am humbled that you are grazing the pages of CGNTZ... :D

To see that you came here specifically to help your buddy out tells that he couldn't handle me...

Thanks for the laughs...
