So I bought a Beretta made Garand a while back and have been working the past 3 weeks to get the gun cleaned up.

Ive never really ventured into the M1 or M14 world until now, having an M305 at the smith right now, I wanted to do this Garand myself and learn something about the gun. A bit apprehensive at first I figured Id just dive in, Ive heard it wasnt to hard but was unsure. Turns out it wasnt to bad......

First off, I purchased it with this cheap plastic ramline stock that needed to go. Good for kicking the crap out of but I wanted a walnut stock.

So I ordered a Boyds Walnut stock from the states, I wanted to slim WW2 version so I could have it as "authentic" as possible. I also ordered all new metal for the gun and new NM sights.

Taking over my bed (I live in an apartment) I started to go to work

So now, Ive taken the walnut and put on about 12 coats of boiled linseed oil inorder to darken up the wood a bit and bring out some nice grain in the walnut. I think it turned out pretty good. Also, I decided to keep the "lock bar" sights and just install the hood aperture.

I will keep the new base, knobs and use the old M1 sight on my M305 build. I added a GI sling to get the completed look to the gun.

So here are some pics of the completed project

I just wanted to re-iterate that I didnt do anything to the action, receiver, barrel or anything. I think it has an SA bolt in the gun but I wanted to get it to look as authentic as possible. Also, the gun went together very well, everything is nice and tight, nothing is loose or moves around. Overall, I am very impressed...

If anyone has any other suggestions, let me hear them. This is the only M1 I ever want to own, so I want it to look great.

Looks good! You did a good job, I like working on M1's they are a very cool rifle.

Ya it was pretty cool to see how simple the gun is really... I havent really had anyone to teach me anything so Ive just sort of been learning, reading, tinkering. haha I just dont wanna break anything.

Holy crap! I don't think I've ever seen lock bar sights still on a Garand. Good think you opted to keep them, else the gods would likely inflict some bad karma on you.

The wood came out looking very nice. You might have to drag it behind your bike for a block to give it a broken in look.

Ya I like how they operate more. Easier to use... they are bit beat up but whatever, I was thinking of filling all the markings with white paint so it would be easier to see.. but im not sure yet..

One of my M1's has the lock bar. I seem to think they were the second style put on the rifle, then they went to the later design that was also used on the M-14.
Now all you need to do is get that thing off to Kev and get the bedding done!!
By the way, we have a NRA 200m match on the 27th of July Brandon, will we see you there?
