So I bought a Beretta made Garand a while back and have been working the past 3 weeks to get the gun cleaned up.
Ive never really ventured into the M1 or M14 world until now, having an M305 at the smith right now, I wanted to do this Garand myself and learn something about the gun. A bit apprehensive at first I figured Id just dive in, Ive heard it wasnt to hard but was unsure. Turns out it wasnt to bad......
First off, I purchased it with this cheap plastic ramline stock that needed to go. Good for kicking the crap out of but I wanted a walnut stock.
So I ordered a Boyds Walnut stock from the states, I wanted to slim WW2 version so I could have it as "authentic" as possible. I also ordered all new metal for the gun and new NM sights.
Taking over my bed (I live in an apartment) I started to go to work
So now, Ive taken the walnut and put on about 12 coats of boiled linseed oil inorder to darken up the wood a bit and bring out some nice grain in the walnut. I think it turned out pretty good. Also, I decided to keep the "lock bar" sights and just install the hood aperture.
I will keep the new base, knobs and use the old M1 sight on my M305 build. I added a GI sling to get the completed look to the gun.
So here are some pics of the completed project
I just wanted to re-iterate that I didnt do anything to the action, receiver, barrel or anything. I think it has an SA bolt in the gun but I wanted to get it to look as authentic as possible. Also, the gun went together very well, everything is nice and tight, nothing is loose or moves around. Overall, I am very impressed...
If anyone has any other suggestions, let me hear them. This is the only M1 I ever want to own, so I want it to look great.
