Deciding between DA Grizzly 12.5" bead sight and H&R Tamer 20ga for my first shotgun. I'm no newb to guns, just been playing with handguns mainly....

I probably won't buy another one for a while, so I'm looking for an all around shotgun. Mainly for frap/skeet and as a camping/ car trip gun (so it has to be fairly compact -both are ~33") and of course zombie defense :)

Tamer 20 is single shot so may not be the best gun for SD, but probably would be better for shooting clay pigeons. What I like about is though is that it's pretty light and comes with a built in shell holder and has a pistol grip. Also it's nickel plated and is $100 less than Grizzly. here's what it looks like a pic

Grizzly is a cooler gun I guess, and is a better SD gun, but I'm not sure how well it would work for trap/skeet. I wonder if they will even let me use it...

So with that in mind what would you pick if you were me?

For SD, Grizzly, because of its multiple shots capability and 12ga has a wider variety of ammo than 20ga.

For trap/skeet, neither. Can't shoot skeet with a single shot when you call doubles, and trap/skeet with a 12.5" is probably not too welcomed at most fields (besides being hard to shoot).

I'd buy an 870 express for what you are looking for. You can get one for slightly more than a grizzly. It will do absolutly everything a shotgun can be asked to do, more efficiently than either of the options above. And when you have more money to play with you can buy a shorter barrel.

The Grizz is a great gun, but by no means is it a be all end all purpose gun. It can certainly be used for trap and skeet, but I think the muzzle blast might wear thin with onlookers after some time.

First, you can't shoot skeet with a single barrel. There is something called "double", which means you have to shot 2 clays.

Second, pistol grip is VERY bad for clay games. Don't ask how I found it out :).

CanAm mentioned he was planning different length barrels. 28" barrel on Grizzly would be a nice trap tool.

A Semi works fine for Skeet (single barrel) A 28" Grizley wouldn't be my first choice at Trap, it has Doubles too.

This is the most bizarre thread I've seen in awhile.

I don't think EITHER of those firearms is good for the purpose you intend to put them to.

20 gauge is an expensive caliber, you'd have to be pretty damned wealthy to afford to shoot rounds of any clay game with those.

Also, a 20 gauge single shot is going to recoil as much or more than a heavier 12 gauge.

A 20 gauge single shot is nice to carry in the field and fast handling for upland game birds, not for all day clay shooting.

And a 12.5 inch barrelled gun for clay games??? Forgettabboutit!

The grizzly is really a good defense gun especially in close quarters or tight situations, and is small enough to carry out and about if bears are a possibility, but you might get annoyed with a 24 plus inch barrelled gun and not take it with you everywhere, thus defeating the purpose.

If you want a gun for clays you need an affordable over/under double with single trigger, or a fast handling pump like the winchester 1300, which is the fastest pump action made today, and sells very cheaply and in great quantity, or an affordable and reliable semi-auto.

Seriously, bizarre thread.

remington 870 with a 28" vented barrel with remchoke is a good shotgun to have for clay shooting. They're cheap and reliable.

Don't get a 12.5" for clay shooting. most ranges won't even allow it.

Huh? 20 gauge and 12 gauge target ammo is priced the same in these parts. [/QUOTE]

Why? He isn't setting out to win a medal just have some fun at the club.

I don't disagree it might not be the best choice but I don't know of any club in these parts that outright prohibits short shotguns. You might get a sideways look or two or maybe a smartass comment but they are legal guns and aren't banned anywhere I know of.

I haven't seen to many "Zombies" on the Trap or Skeet fields. But while shooting Sporting Clay's, you sometimes see them lurking in the bush.

If u are looking for fun & defence then eather will work. The griz is better for zombie work. for allaround look at the mossberg 2 barrell sets. Far more versitile & can be used for clays at the range as well. It will also be a hunting gun if u go there. Good luck, have fun & shoot lots. Let us know witch way you went. AJ

I haven't seen any zombies. A grouse or two, sometimes deer, a porcupine but no zombies. ;)

x2 Barrel swaps are quick. The mossberg is low priced, well made, and you can get all sorts of barrels and pistol grips/folders.

I'm still waiting to hear back from an email I sent CanAmmo about replacement barrel's for the Grizzly. get the 12.5 for an all round bush gun when I'm out n about, but swap out to the bigger/longer barrel's when I want to go over to other duties.

or at least I recall reading on here about replacement barrel's for the Grizz...

Expensive? At my club 12 & 20 gauge shells are $6.00 a box. At Wal-Mart the 100 bulk packs of 12 & 20 are the same price, somewhere around $28.

Also, a 20 gauge single shot is going to recoil as much or more than a heavier 12 gauge.

Generally 20 gauge shells are loaded with 7/8 oz shot & 12 gauge with 1 1/8oz, so a 20 gauge shell generates less recoil. Therefore the lighter 20 gun does not necessarily make for more recoil. Also most 20 gauge singles weigh a fair bit as they are mostly being built on a 12 gauge frame.

A 20 gauge single shot is nice to carry in the field and fast handling for upland game birds, not for all day clay shooting.

The "serious" skeet shooters at my club hardly ever shoot 12 gauge anymore, it's mostly 20 gauge that they shoot.
For trap and sporting clays it's certainly 12 gauge that dominates.

I shoot my Grizzly at skeet, and I shoot scores with it that are the same as I do with my 26"/28"/30" shotguns. My current Grizzly is the fixed cylinder bore model, so its only good for skeet. When I get my new one with choke tubes I'm going to give trap and 5 stand a go with it!

Well, I ordered the Tamer 20ga.....even though only 1 person voted for it :p

I was looking for one several months ago and now they seem to be availabe again, also it will be in the mail tomorrow (hopefully) and I wouldve have to wait a couple of weeks Grizzly to be shipped out.

I may the Grizzly eventually though...
