Hey all.

Just bought a used Model 624. Unseen from a reputable dealer it would seem.

There is a crack (maybe from metal fatigue) where the cylinder latch hits the frame when closing. On the outside.

Anyone seen or heard of this? No digital camera as the wife has it out west. Gun is at my dad's.

The shop told me to ship it back and they will refund my money. The gun is in great shape except for the (maybe 1/16") crack.

Is this in the scalloped area that guides the spring loaded pin to compression?

If so, it's likely only a cosmetic problem.

You will have to give us a better description of where it is. It could just be the side plate where it mates up with the frame. Have you ever owned a S&W revolver before to compare it to?

There was a recall affecting certain 624's made in the mid-1980's, although I think that was due to the steel used in the cylinders. Might be worth checking out, though, with S&W, if you plan on keeping the revolver. I would be leery of any cracking in the frame, though, even in a non-stressed location.

I found this on another website so I don't know if it's valid--apparently the affected serial number ranges are:

AD###X
AE###X
AF###X
AG###X
AH###X
ALV###
N910000-N953000

although not all revolvers in this range are affected.

You're sure it's a crack and not a deep scratch?

I dug out my 686 to have a look to compare--this is the area you're describing, right?

I noticed that I've got a few scratches--probably from years of speedloader use. Does your look worse?

Here's a shot I took from the other side--I've got a groove where the cylinder pin rides on the frame when I close the cylinder. Does this look like yours? Is the crack all the way through? My 686 dates from 1984 and has fired probably 12,000 rounds or so.

Crack was more on the outside.

The inside has some strange markings in it. Almost led me to beleive that some work had been done.

I am going to dad's Monday to ship it back. I will take a good hard look at it.

P.S. What camera do you have, Master G? Does well with close up detail.

Hello. I have the same gun and my # also starts with ALW###X I do not have a crack in mine but I could see it happening as the area is not very thick. The spring that pushes the .pin that goes through the area is very strong. The 44 special is nice to shoot but it is not the smoothest working gun, rough to unlatch the cylinder. I am going to compair it with my mod 29.
