So I finally got all my accessories for my newly purchased Remington 700 SPS Tactical .223 Rem. So I installed everything and went to zero it in last week and this thing was SH*T. I could have gotten tighter groupings with my AR-15 or my M14 using iron sights. I was practically shooting 2 inch groupings at 50 yards...WTF I thought something had to be wrong.

So, I was cleaning it and noticed the entire barreled action was leaning/tilted towards one side of the Hogue rubber overmold stock...the barrel was actually pressing/making contact with the stock near the muzzed...hhmmm. So I removed the gun from the stock and got a little creative:D Inside the stock were the barrel lug fits in, it was all chewed up and non-supportive to the barrels balance. Instead of sending it to a smith (time & money) I "bedded" it using Outer's Cleaning Patches for my .223. It took me about 4 tries to get it perfect, building it up internally so the barrel lug fit super snug and level. Put it back together and torqued that sucker down nice. Went to the range last night with Federal Match King 69 gr. BTHP's and noticed a HUGE difference.....F*ck Ya :dancingbanana:

Going to head out to Silverdale soon to 100yards & 200yards and see how it performs at some real distances (for the .223 at least :) )

Cool. Now you can do it right with epoxy and make it permanent. I've heard of guys using those foam expanding ear plugs under the barrel for bedding and getting great improvements. All I can say is good for you, and shame on the factory for releasing a gun in that state. I'm really skeptical of todays tupperware synthetic stocks. About all you can count on in my opinion is durability. The one's I've had do little to aid accuracy.

I don't think the factory did ... isn't the Hogue stock an after market stock?

But is shows how important bedding is...

Have it properly glass bedded ... the patch bedding will change over time or when you disassemble it....

I went to the range last Sunday with my new .223 SPS TAC.....same as yours, but in HS-Pres stock :)
using Winchester white box 45gr ammo I got 5shots groups not more than 0.5MOA :) at 200m with no wind I got groups measured 1.4inch the biggest one....and it`s a 600bucks factory rifle :)))))

The SPS Tactical comes from the factory with the Hogue stock. It's too bad that they didn't use the version with the full length bedding block, as I've heard the regular one is flimsy enough to flex with a bipod attached, enough that the barrel will contact the stock from the weight of the rifle.

I just put a pillar bed Hogue on a rifle. There is a bit of flex in the forend but its not too bad. Good enough for a hunting rifle but I'd want a full length block for a long range or precision shooter.

Took my puppies out to 200 yards at Silverdale. I was a little devestated when I arrived because it was as windy as a MOFO. It's really challanging to shoot medium/long distances in the wind...I usually waited for a slight calm to make my shots, and still got decent groupings giving the conditions.

With proper bedding it will only get better.
100 and 200 yards isn't medium/long range unless you are shooting a .22.
Check out an ORA Intro Day www.ontariorifleassociation.org and you will get to shoot at short range 300 yards. There is a day coming up at Borden in Oct. I believe. 300 yards is considered short range, 500 & 600 yards is mid range and 800, 900 and 1000 yards are long range.

If your .223 has the right twist you should be able to keep them in the bull at 1000 yards with the right bullet.

"...patch bedding will change over time..." And will hold water right next to the steel. Parkerizing won't hold off the rust forever.

By the looks of the ORA web page it is Oct 18th. I would advise you to book ahead, these day are very popular. Go to the web page and follow the links for the Introductory Day.

True, the bipod does.
