I shoot lots of big game cartridges, but whenever I go hunting the big guns get left in the cabinet and I always reach for the trusty 6.5 x 55 swede....

That is for a different poll called "What cartridge is used to compensate for your lack of Manhood?":D

Of course I am shooting a 300 WSM in a 7lb package so I'll just walk away now.

Manhood is defined by caliber choice? Whoooaaa, you don't really mean that....I know you don't ;)

The poll asked for the most popular, not what the greatest thing since sliced bread was.

I'm surprised at the results of the .303 British. The poll asked what is the most popular Canadian cartridge. Have the tides turned? Are there really more people using a .30-06 now than the old .303? I'll still bet here the two are probably pretty close in useage. Even though the poll results say otherwise.

I have a great deal of respect for the old .303 but I havent hunted with one for over 30 years. My uncle used to lend me an 1895 Winchester lever action or his old Ross M10 when I was a kid. I have been an avid hunter/shooter for a long time but other than sporterized lee enfields or P14 enfields, I cannot recall any new manufacture sporting rifles in 303. Yet every major European and North American arm manufacturer still chambers a 30-06.
I dont see it as suprising that the 303 is not fareing better in this poll. Perhaps if Ruger would chamber it's No.1 in this grand old caliber, I could be persuaded to add more iron to my collection.

hands down, 308 or 30-06, north America has always loved the .308 diameter, and with a very versatile bullet selection in both of these its no wonder, an interesting question would be whats the most popular in Europe? would it be the 6.5x55 or something else i wonder

By sales ... I'm betting the 30-06 is still No 1.

I've used 44-40, 44 Magnum, 30-30, 25-35, 450 Alaskan, 30-06, 270, 264 WM, 25-06, 35 Whelen & 45-70 so far. Am looking forward to breaking in a 257 Roberts this fall. :D

Most people choose the 30-6, since the don't know any better

As my previous post suggested.

It would also be interesting to know just how they chose that first gun and scope. The most common reasons for choosing a first gun that I have heard are,

1)My father/uncle/grandfather/friend has the same gun.

2)I liked the looks of it.They had no idea that they could have had an identical looking rifle in another chambering.

3)It was on sale.

It's like people going to vote, and selecting the only name that they recognize, without actually knowing anything about the candidate.:D
