Next project started.

This is a big bastard, it measures 36 1/2 " I know that with shotguns they can be non restricted with a short barrel if the overall lenth is long enough, does anyone know if this also applies to carbines ? An 18 1/2 " barrel would add another 3 3/4" to the overall lenght.

PS Just looked on the CFC site and it is restricted, I will turn a new barrel for it. The quick change barrel system is a nice feature.

Very interesting...I read a writeup on the Suomi, apparently made to very exacting tolerances...the bolt to receiver fit was so precise that the suction of the bolt helped control the rate of fire.

Yes there is a valve to control the vaccum at the end of the reciever, they have everything and are beautifully made. The bolt rides in a rail which is an extension of the rear site which protrudes into the reciever, the tolerances on this are tight as well, one screw up and I will have to start again. So far so good, but it's more technical than a sten that's for sure.

Ahhhh, I love this site.... The problem is that now I need a mill and a lathe.

Spencer - Great project!!!

Edit: Spencer, even if it looks rediculous, please make 1 or 2 that are non restricted! It would make a great..... grouse gun...

I'm no expert, but my advise would don't bother getting a mill or a lathe for the odd project, it's not worth the outlay. Get an engineer who has the machinery to let you use his lathe and milling machine, that way you get the job done without the vast outlay and what's even better you get tuition from someone who really knows what they are doing. At the end of the day even with the use of high tec machinery you will find that you spend more time working with simple hand tools, there is nothing better than a nice sharp file.

Suomi M31's can be either restricted or non restricted in less than a minute. They have a quick change barrel system:)

One of the nice things about making a semi only Suomi is that the conversion to semi auto only could not be easier. If you look at underside of the bolt it looks almost like a sten bolt that has been modified to semi auto only.

The trigger mechanism is the only thing that needs to be modified. There are three positions on the selector, back is safe, pushed forward one click is semi auto, and fully forward is full auto. There is a bar that slides in the bottom of the housing when the selector is moved. All that needs to be done is to block the bar from moving into the full auto position to make it semi auto. A blocking bar made to fit in front of the selector bar and welded into place would deactivate the full auto feature permanently. It is also a simple matter to alter the trigger housing and gun so that a stock trigger mechanism could not be substituted.

Trigger pulled in the semi auto position.

My own personal milling machine:D

This is what I am aiming for. The curved magazine recess is likely to take quite a while, lots of hand fitting.

Ejection port almost completed. I was dreading this part as the cuts are half an inch deep in places, and the angles of the cuts have to be just right if it's going to look a professional job. Doing this with a dremel and file seemed like trying to move a mountain with a tea spoon at times, but I got there in the end.

BRILLIANT!

Alll with a dremel and bench press.

Damn!

Not all of it was done with a drill press and a dremel, the reciever tube was done on a large lathe and a milling machine. It is actually made in two pieces, the part with the barrel lugs and ejector fits inside the reciever tube proper.

The CFC tell me that when you have made a reciever it's time to give them a call and register it. When the gun is completed call them again.

I feel confident about submitting this for approval. There is no way that this will be able to be converted to full auto without considerable work. It's easy to achieve this with a suomi.
