i was at the local gun shop and for $499 rifle, scope and box of ammo included out the door and $50 mail in rebate

is this to good be true?

i wonder how well they shoot?

anyone bought one of these?

You'd be hard pressed to find a more despised rifle. The 770 and 710 have a reputation, deserved or not, for being a shoddily-built gun. I don't know any 770 owners, but have spoken to several 710 owners, all of whom are happy with their rifles, but they all wanted the same thing: a very inexpensive rifle to take hunting. Tack-driver accuracy wasn't a concern and neither was cosmetics. Good thing, because IMHO that rifle is pretty hideous.
The resale value on these guns is almost nil.

The Stevens 200 is a much better low cost rifle.

+1 on the Stevens 200 rifles.

Or go for one of the Savage package rifles with the scope. Similar money to the Rem 770 deal but way better rifle, IMHO.

But, if you want to have a Remington then add a little cash & go for a Rem 700 SPS. Down the road if you want to go up to a better quality rifle you should still be able to get a good buck for a used SPS in decent shape.

If you only care about "econo" right up front & not concerned at all about future resale, then go for the 770... ;)

the remington 770 is a piece of #%@$. calling them 'the BIC lighter of the gun world' is an insult to BIC, and too much of a compliment to the 770 -- at least a BIC is durable and reliable.

get a proper remington 700 SPS -- a full-fledged remington 700, just with a barebones stock and a less pretty finish. youll get a real gun with an actual threaded barrel, metal triggerguard and floorplate, a rifle action that doesnt rely on a plastic sleeve, and full compatibility with all remington 700 accessories and take-off parts in the EE.

a 700 SPS is $500, minus your $40 mail-in rebate. youll have to spend roughly another $250 on scope and mounts but the end result will be much, much better.
if youre really on a budget, a stevens 200 can be had for $300 and with a half-decent scope and mounts you are looking at $550 or so.

the only reason the 770 is around is because on the surface it looks like a good deal and many people just dont know any better. remington also capitalizes on the similarity to the 'remington 700' name -- despite the fact that the 770 is nothing like a 700 at all.

Just do a search here on threads about the 770/710. You'll find all you're looking for and more. Near biblical amounts of people have said its a piece of crap. I have handled a few and it was actually comical at how bad they are made. Just get a savage or stevens or SPS, or find a good used rifle/scope on the EE. Can probably get a great gun/scope for 500-650 there

Quote: "youll get a real gun with an actual threaded barrel"

It is not threaded into the receiver?

haha, no - its press fit
it gets worse: the action is just tube stock, with a plastic inner sleeve that forms the bolt races.

heres an old post where i list everything wrong with the 710/770.

well, if you look at the Savage and Remington as the 'parent' rifles (lets keep Savage vs Remington stuff out of this), and the Stevens and 710/770 as their entry level offerings... this is what you give up when you buy one:

Stevens, or Savage rifle/scope package
-no accutrigger
(pretty much everything else is the same, and factory/aftermarket parts are interchangeable)

Remington 710/770
you basically give up everything, because the rifle shares nothing in common with the 700

-the entire receiver is just a straight piece of pipe with a plastic sleeve that fits in it to make the bolt raceways :runaway:
-press-fit barrel (even threading the barrel/receiver was considered too much of a manufacturing cost)
-recoil lug not attached to action, just sandwiched in plastic stock and holds a small notch in the barrel
-plastic triggerguard
-trigger in a plastic housing (and non-adjustable)
-plastic tang
-many people breaking a simple plastic part like the mag latch and having to order an entirely new stock assembly
-plastic bolt stop that can (and does) actually wear away
-bolt gets very rough when gun starts to heat up after firing 3-4 shots
-plastic bolt shroud

basically they went over every single part of the 700 and re-designed it to keep manufacturing/material costs at the absolute minimum. sounds like just the kind of rifle you want to invest your money in :runaway:

look into a 700 SPS, a Savage package, or a Stevens 200 depending on your budget but give the 710/770 a wide berth :)

I used to own a 710 in 270win. The stupid thing could not shoot the same every time. I would be 1" to the left next shot it would be 2" down and to the right.

I sold it and bought a ruger M77 and glad i did.

Also, maybe look at weatherby. They are cheaper (by wholesale sports) then the sps.

Good thing you didn't keep it otherwise your CGN handle might have been Rem 710!

BTW - just realised this:

LeBaron has the 770 for $399, or $359 with their club discount. add the $50 rebate on top of that and youre at $309. theyre also in Quebec so you dont pay PST (good stuff for Ontarians).

your gun store sucks, a box of ammo is not worth $140 :D

My Savage F110 (.270 win) is a great starter rifle for me because I buy the best thing I can get for the cheapest.
(someday it will have a leupold).

It was .5 moa at 75 yards with Power shocks (crappy federal ammo)

I was hitting a fridge and 50 gallon barrel standing up
80 % of the time with half assed concentration @ 400-700 yards.

The Stevens 200 is an even better choice because then you can put a nice Leupold on it.

(but then you are over 450 dollars)

Also, the 770^ may be the bic lighter of rifles, but it is accurate, always shoots, and would be a perfect truck gun. If you drop it you won't kick yourself as much as say dropping a $1200 dollar starter gun.

If you buy a Stevens 200 you'll pay no more, (and probably less), and you'll have a better "truck gun" that you won't feel as bad about dropping as you would a $1200 dollar gun.

As a product, the 710 and 770 have simply always deserved to fail in the marketplace. They were never wholly without utility, it's just that they have never offered more gun for the money than a Stevens 200 or a Savage 11/111 package rifle, and in fact are usually asking for a higher price at retail.

+1 for the savage way better gun. The 710/770 is the worst of the worst
trust me I own both. I thought that the 710 would be a good starting
rifle for my son, what a mistake so far I have fired 2 boxes of ammo through
it and had to replace the firing assy and also had the whole bolt come out of the rifle while trying to cycle it "POS". I went and purchased the savage package gun in .243 so far not to bad, really accurate, cycles smoothly
the simmons scope is alittle cheap and kind of ugly stock but other than that not bad for rifle, sling and scope for about $520 taxes in. As for the 710
it looks like it might end up in the wifes garden "TOMATO STAKE"
If this is gonna be your only rifle to hunt deer etc.. 1 week a year, pick the Savage. At least it will make it through the week. The 770, I promise you wont. my 2cents cdn1

770's at Kelly's guns I believe are $349+tax and you wouldnt believe how many they sell I was in there looking for a camo/SS .243 they talked about the 770. I said you guys actually sell those response was yup about 6-8 a week  why do people take price over quality?......I asked to see one and the bolt would not cycle properly it kept jamming up they said it just needed some lube I replied no I think it needs to be thrown in the trash :runaway:

Buy a Stevens 200 and put a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40mm on it and you will be a happy camper and it will only be about $599.99+tax.
