Galil

Vimy Ridge: Wow, that's unusual! I like! It's a bit rich for my blood (event to recreate I'm sure). I've been thinking about this tonight, and I don't think I want to have to buy a new heavy barrel to turn one of these into a Galil ARM knock-off.

How about a South African R4? Didn't they use the pencil barrel with a synthetic, bi-pod cut, hand-guard, and no carry handle? That way I would only have to locate the proper hand-guard, and Gas Lug, and a pinned bi-pod. I know where to get the lug, and bi-pod now. I just need to find an R4 hand-guard. Also, weren't they painted brown? Since I'm going to duracoat them both, then I could just do one in brown, and one in black. The only problem with the R4 for me is that I've seen so few pictures of them. Anyone got any? Doing an early 80's SA-R4 would make it kind of a rare bird, and hopefully not be as expensive as doing a ARM; thoughts?

This is the only close-up pic of an R4 that I could find, and I'm not sure if it's stock:

Bottom line is: I want to keep one as-is, and have "fun" with the other one. Any assistance in my quest would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Found this one @ 3:15, looks nutria brown to me:

I hate you guys - in the best possible way, of course.

And while it is preaching to the choir, keep working for that Conservative majority and there's a chance you'll be shooting these rifles this time next year :)

Found this on Galil Talk today:

I have so always wanted one. For some reason I cannot quite put my finger on it is my favorite gun. It just looks...umm right to me. I have considered turning my 858 into one though the gas tube and mag might be difficult....and I just noticed the front sight. Now isn't that just a nifty idea to store the bi pod! Smart little Israelis!

it's amazing what a race of people can do when faced with extinction.

I found this and had to share.

""I covet my neighbors..."wives?"" (Because with that many Galil's, his real wife must have left him a long time ago! ;) Lucky SOB! LOL )

As a civilian shooter, who cherishes every mag. that I invest in, I can appreciate the economy of the exercise at hand, but I am left with the nagging desire to not drop good magazines on the ground like that. LOL. A difference in the types of endeavors I involve myself in versus what those men do everyday. Point-of-fact: "Oh those poor mags!" LMAO! Good vid. Thanks.

AK mags are arguably the toughest mags out there, I would hardly worry about them landing on the floor. In fact I would be more worried about the floor.

I agree with you, but it's the trained emotional response developed over years that I am referring to. You never abuse your equipment, even if it can take it, unless you absolutely have to, and as a civilian shooter, it's almost never necessary. I understand why they do it. I'm just saying that seeing the mag being dropped makes my skin crawl. I have the overwhelming urge to run over and catch it before it hits the ground. LOL.

Corpus,

The picture you found on Galliltalk is an R-5. South African Gallils came in 2 flavours, R-4 and R-5.

R-4 was the ARM, but with synthetic handguards instead of wood.

R-5 was short barreled, (SAR model) with AR synthetic handguards

Other differences between Israeli and South African:

1. The buttstock is a bit longer (South Africans are tall, they also made the footwell on their version of the Panhard armoured car bigger).

2. The buttstock is made of synthetic material, carbonfibre or something similar.

3. There is a modification to the bolt, consisting of a washer/bushing to give the firing pin a spring loaded effect to eliminate slamfires when using soft primered ammo.

and lastly, the colour. Originally, all South African rifles were painted brown, (like the one in the picture), as was everything else the South African Army used at the time. Unfortunately, overheating the barrels by firing lots of full auto, turned the paint pink, so the spec was changed to black. Vektor (the manufacturer), also made civilian semi-auto only versions of both guns.

The R-4 and R-5 are still in service in South Africa. The R-4 may be replaced in whole or in part by the CR-21, which is just an R-4/Gallil with a synthetic bullpup stock. The R-5 is also used as a "patrol carbine" by the police.

Hope you enjoy your new toys...
