I went Grouse hunting near my home on Saturday, late afternoon. I saw a lot of grouse, but didn't get a bead on a single one. Feeling skunked, I walked back to my property which was a short 30 minute stroll from my hunting spot. Once on my land, I had the funny feeling that I was not alone. Glassing the trees, I saw the tell-tale ears watching me from behind a hill about 100 yards away. I have a lot of deer, but rarely can get close to a buck. When I saw the spikes on this guy...
... a couple of slugs went into the 870. Watching and waiting, the doe and buck bolted, stopped and returned to where I was waiting. I was shocked that they doubled back almost right to me, they were curious what I was doing. The buck presented perfectly at 50 yards slightly downhill from my spot, and off went the safety...
And in the fridge he went, aging for a week (or more) at 1°.

I'll finally get a chance to open one of the spicy peach salsa jars we canned this summer, to have with a mule deer roast.
