Poachers!

Just a question here to the hunters in general. I've got nothing against hunting I used to hunt as well but quit when I ended up shooting more than I could eat or give away.

How do you feel about trophy hunters ?? i.e. people that shoot something just for the head with no intention of ever using any of the animal for any other purpose than for bragging rights!
Does this seem ok to you guys ??

Mike.

NO!!

O.k. so its not just me then. There's a guy with his own magazine that I buy once in a while when he's got some good rifle/reloading write ups but everytime I buy it it pisses me off that i've probably just help to finance his next bit Lion/Elephant hunt.
I've never hear of anyone eating lions, I'd understand if you've got one in your district that's a danger to people but not travelling half way across the planet just to find one to shoot.

In my years of hunting in N Ont, the worst I seen was...a...*** ******* (use your imagination) guys coming in on the train from Moosenee with trucks & magnums. In one year they completely cleaned out a large area of moose, they left the ones that struggled to far away from the road to be handy!

One other time a group next to us poached a little bull, someone reported it & the COs came to question us, for a while we didn't know what they were talking about but gave them enough description of the gang that they got caught & charged, I believe they were from Guelph, one guy road an old Honda 90 motorcycle around :p When we went to look all they had taken was the hind 1/4s & the horns.

Why would it get locked up? I don't see anyone condoning illegal activities.. I see people stating their opinions or identifying problems they have seen with others..

What I mean is that with those 2 topics: African "trophy" hunting, and "redish skinned guys", nothing constructive
has ever come out of them. And it dissolves into a back & forth fowl language hate-fest, that eventually gets locked. :(
Opinions are great...that is why we are all here, to give our point of view. :)
But the original topic of this thread was "poachers".

A buddy of mine was hunting Cape Buffalo, not sure what country but was told if he sees any stray dogs or guys in Camo to shoot to kill.
Was told they are poachers and usually armed with AK's and will have no problem shooting at him......maybe we should adopt the same policies.

Just a thought???

im not fond of it. my philosophy is if your not going to have a practical use for something. you dont need it (in the way of hunting) if your just going to mount the head for bragging rights and the meat goes to waste, then i dont agree. if they donate the meat, then go right ahead.

most african game taken the meat is donated to local tribes. so im ok with that. if i had the cash to go there, id love to take one of those huge buffalo.

To answer the original question, POACHING does nothing but tarnishes LEGAL hunters in the public's eye. If you have ever poached or thought about poaching - STOP and go buy a tag. I don't care if you're on welfare and have the time, bullets and gas to go hunting, you can afford a tag! If you're hunting out-of-season, you'll eventually been seen and sooner or later you'll be hearing a knock at your door. Never mind 'reporting a poacher,' string 'em high from the nearest tree!

Don't worry...If there is one thing I hate its poachers, people who think its OK to take more than the limit, road "hunters"(and I use that term very loosely),
and trespassers. They should all have their hunting privileges revoked, and their equipment ceased.

There are rules for a reason...conservation of a resource.

And yes "Senior", I don't agree on special hunting rights for a select group. We all live in the same country and should follow the same rules to conserve the wildlife we have.:)

In Minden Ontario last season I heard of a guy that got caught poaching a buck on the Bethel Church road.

This guy had no right to be hunting in the area. He saw a big buck cross the road and shot it right on the pavement.

The CO went and got him not long after, it was like a CSI crime scene. Charged him and his son too.

Everyone in the area thought it looked good on him.

Not only did he poach the deer but fired his shots right toward a near by house.

No regard for safety of ethics at all

I see the odd guy knowingly trespassing on private land WITHOUT florescent orange on, during our shotgun season.
Clearly not wanting to be seen and prolly poaching.

What do you do when you are in you're tree stand and the poachers vehicle is unknown and out of sight?

I was out on the highway coming back from an unsuccessful hunt, when I noticed a BIG FLOCK of birds circling about 75 yards from the road. There were Ravens (at least 40), 2 eagles, several Hawks, and a few other species I didn't know. Of course the first thing that came to my mind is " somethings dead in the woods". Me and my hunting partner stopped the truck, walked in and came upon 3 dead Buffalo. (2 large bulls and a calf) . The bulls were literally cut in 2 with the back half gone off each, and the calf had only the "backstraps" gone. Nothing else. They were dead about a month or so.
There was quite a mess around them of tissue etc, as they were cut up with a chainsaw. I didn't see any bullet holes, but the birds had torn up the fur quite badly, so it was hard to tell. I took pictures and marked my GPS to the exact spot. I made a B-line right to the wildlife office and they scrambled out the door. Of course its poaching seeing as they are only able to be had via a draw, and not in that area. The equivalent of a whole adult was rotting on the ground plus 95% of a calf. It made me sick. But I guess the poacher(s) wanted to get it done quickly, hence the chainsaw usage. I will try to find the pics in my computer and post them. I have 1000's upon 1000's of pics, so it may take a little while. They really need to be stopped, or at least make the time fit the crime.

x2

How can you have a "trophy" of the hunt if you haven't done the right things (ethically) to deserve it?

Anyone can shoot an animal, but it doesn't make you a hunter, it makes you a gunman.

When we were driving to work tonight there were at least 5 dead whitetails in the ditch, along Hwy 32, all had been hit by CARELESS drivers. IMHO this is also an issue and nobody ever seems to mention the tragic waste of game animals on our roadways.

The ravens and coyotes sure do appreciate the careless drivers though.

what annoys me is when someone gets hurt while " Hunting" at night with a light,It's always reported as a "Hunting Accident". I'm sorry but this was no hunting accident because you weren't Hunting , you were poaching!
