If anyone has seen Enemy At the Gates they will have seen the scene where the Russian sniper instructor tosses the K98K on the floor and says it is not a good sniper rifle.
My question is why, apart from national pride would he say this? Is there any truth to statement? Was the Mauser not equal or better or was the Mosin-Nagant the better sniper rifle?

With all the errors in that movie, you will achieve Moron Status by absorbing it's content into your brain. The rifle is only as good as the skill of the shooter.

Overall I'd suggest K98 - much more inherently accurate system, much better made, often better optics, etc etc etc.

Both sniper versions were hand picked as exceptional rifles from among the other rifles in their manufacture, so they were usually capable or more accuracy than usual.

Comes down to user in the end.

Only big plus I see to the mosin is its simplicity. If you're dealing with a lot of things, it's a gun that's easy to work with and on.

Mosin FTW. I don't understand the legend of the K98. Yes, they are nice, well engineered rifles. However, looking at the locking system on a K98 vs. a Mosin, there's little reason why the Mosin is not as good or better than the Mauser. Also, Having owned a Mosin Sniper, and a few plain K98's, I would argue that the Mosin in sniper configuration is a slicker gun. The bent bolt makes a world of difference in the way the sniper mosin handles, it feels very nice. Also, the K98 feels undersized. I do not find it a comfortable gun to shoot. But of course, this is all IMHO.

ITS THE man NOT THE MACHINE THAT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE IN A DOGFIGHT .............

above is a quote from the red baron .........richtofen.
my opinion id want either a nagant pu or pe sniper rifle.

Were accuracy is concerned I think the choice of ammo is more important than the choice between these two rifles .

I have seen some rough mausers and some rough mosins. I have seen some very nice mausers, but I have not seen a mauser that was better made than my Polish M-44's

The germans liked the Mosin sniper system well enough to reissue any captured rifles they found still serviceable. Many german snipers actually preferred the mosins.

I suspect the real difference between equally good snipers would be the scopes they had available.

Spencer, I have k98 mausers that are every bit as well finished as the Polish M44 and more accurate as well.

My shooter Polish M-44 is a minute of angle rifle, but only with the right loads. I have seen mausers that were as well finished, but no better.

Any large ring mauser is better than a mosin nagant sniper variant or otherwise. I've owned the best mosin snipers ever made (Hungarian 91/30 M52, Czech VZ 54/57) and frankly they are poorly made rifles ciompared to the K98k Mauser. But the Commies made good barrels - they do shoot well after a crash course in trigger tuning.

LOL @ U

Mosin any day. Who won the war? Ok, so the Russkies had a few million more men, but ultimately, who employed snipers more effectively? The Russians. Furthermore, I'd say that a Polish, or even nice Hungarian, or even average wartime 91/30 is as well made a gun as a K98. At the end of the day, though it's about the ammo more than anything. I've got what is by all accounts a POS 1950 Ishy SMLE, and it shoots better than anything I've got. 3/4 inch groups with irons. Considering the 'inferior' bolt of the Enfield, I'd say that's quite a feat, but I would mostly attribute it to a well developed load.

Funny, Riflechair, you didn't make your VZ 54/57 out to be anything close to a "poorly made" rifle in your for sale ad...

ollie read my post again and stop being condescending. You're reading too much into what I wrote. My ignore list just got bigger.

They're equally good.

Generally speaking, your average K98 sniper might have a nicer trigger and might be a shade more accurate due to better quality control standards for both rifles and ammo, but I have yet to hear of the Russians having any trouble hitting what they wanted to.
