Just got my Colt back from Dlask Arms.

It started as a nickel plated 70 series Colt that I bought off the EE. The guys at Dlask Arms were great to deal with and spent a lot of time answering my questions (I had a lot) and giving me suggestions.

My instructions were a bit confusing for the finish and when I went in to pick it up Joe told me that he was not happy with the results and asked me to bring it back in to be refinished at no cost which he was able to do in two days. I was impressed with this considering the first finish was done to my specs. I left the details of what would be done the second time around in his hands and I am very happy with the results.

They installed a Dlask custom magwell and mainspring housing, beavertail, commander hammer, slide stop, full length guide rod, Ed Brown bushing, minor dehorning, new safety, novak rear sights with fiber optic front, they flared the ejection port, checkered the frontstrap at 20 lpi and refinished it.

My next project will be a bobtail commander and I will definately be sending it to Joe to have the work done. The quality of his work is second to none.

Probably not what you want to hear, but I liked it better the other way. :D 'cept for that gad awful extended slide stop and sights.

Did he forget to lower the ejection port while he was at it? And what's with the lip at the bottom of the front strap? That's going to be fun under duress when you want to strip the magazine from the gun if it jams.

Maybe if you install a set of straight/flat bottomed grip panels ... an allen head screw mag catch to match the grip screws too... I don't know.

I'm not impressed ... I think he took a beautiful gun and turned it into... well, you know the rest. Wondering how much that cost you.

I appreciate the feedback. I was looking for input from the CGN community and I do understand that with all guns it comes down to personal preferance. This gun is not reflective of Joe's taste in 1911 styles. Joe basically did everything to my specs except the finish which I am very happy with.

I have some grey G10 flat bottom grips en-route for it. Do you think the ejection port should be lower? I don't see the lip on the frontstrap being an issue as I still have access to the lip of the mag plus all of my mags have basepads on.

As for the cost of the upgrades, I basically spent 1 1/2 times what I paid for the gun which I am more than happy with. Going the custom route is not an economically sound choice but I am a big believer in that you get what you pay for. When you have the work done by a quality gunsmith there is no "settling" like what you usually end up doing when you buy a stock gun.

If the distance between the bottom of the ejection port and the bottom edge of the slide is greater than .480", you run more risk of stovepiping cases. I lower them to about .465"-.470".

Flaring the ejection port just helps the cases to "roll" out of the chamber (for lack of a better term). More so than the benefit of cases not getting dinged during ejection.

nice gun overall, looks like a very nice install of the novak sights, and the beavertail highride looks wicked...... that magwell though, I would rather it o be flush to the front of the grip because I have big hands.

To be honest that was a concern I had too when I decided to go with that magwell over the S & A magwell. I too have huge hands which is why all of my 1911's have a magwell. I was relieved when I got it back and it actually fits my hand perfectly. Easy did have a good point in regards to stripping a mag with it on. I will take a look at that when I get it back (it is in getting the front fiber optic put in).
