Do the Canadian Forces need a new pistol

I'm with Colin here. If a soldier has to pistol whip any bad guy, methinks we've got bigger problems on our hands than potentially not having enough heft to drop the guy with just one whallop.

However, a steel frame does make for a more solid feel in the hand than polymer. And I don't know about you, but if the piece of kit I'm handling feels solid I'll feel more confident and therefore more comfortable with it, which will translate to superior performance.

If a soldier has to transition to his sidearm he is indeed having a bad day. But knowing how Murphy shows up at the worst of time, I maintain my contention that if the sidearm runs dry a steel frame pistol makes a better club than a polymer pistol.

In Colombia, most of the soldiers with sidearms are carrying either Beretta 92's or Jericho's.

how come no one is talking about the berettas ? Wouldn't the new 90-two be a good fit for the CFs ?

Yeah, I think so. It's a mighty fine pistol. There are lots of capable pistols. They would need to figure out what the bidding criteria would be first though. I vote polymer, but it would be nice to see them all go up against each other. Cheapest of the top three and TA DA! I also think though that soldiers should be able to carry whatever pistol they want/or choose not to carry one...as long as they use the geneva/nato approved ammo. If it were my ass, I would want a back up. Just makes sense, in my opinion. Since they already have the 226 in small number's just order 10,000 more and call it a day. (armoured/infantry first in line)

Oh oh Logic and military procurement process used in the same sentence, that will be two demerit points for you!! :slap:

Just how will we retain the bloated process if we use simple solutions like this?

Except that he left out the Artillery and Combat Engineers - both Combat Arms and very likely to need this capability just as much as the grunts and zipperheads. I have guys from my unit that deployed and got in gunfights on a very regular basis. One of my captains commanded a FOB for over 3 weeks due to a "shortage" of infantry officers on-scene...

Actually the Combat Engineers would need it more than the zipperheads. I kind of ignored that part and looked at the fact that we already have them in limited number and it would be a simple buy.
