Hi all, can anyone provide an opinion on using 6.5 Swede Mauser for white tail deer? I assume this is a fine and accurate cartridge for these purposes, but am looking for advice.

thanks :)

6.5 Swede

.
Buy one, start the barbecue, go deer hunting.

If you do your part, the 6.5x55 will take anything up to a Moose. In Sweden the 6.5x55 is regularly used to hunt Alg. The Alg is a Swedish word for Moose.

Very accurate, low recoil, economical to reload, and there are some great buys on 6.5x55 rifles at Trade Ex. You can buy a really good one for $250, and if you really want a sweatheart, there are Husqvarna 1600 series rifles for under $500.

Nosler makes a 125 grain Partition bullet, if you reload your own ammo. If you are going after some bigger animals, the 140 grain works very well.

Best all round gun there is IMHO, I handload 85 gr HP @ 3300 fps for chucks, 120 gr ballistic tips for deer and 140 gr. for moose and it will shoot under an inch all day

Great deer cartridge. I kick myself for not picking up a couple of these surplus mausers a few years back when they could be had for next to nothing.

My swede will be my go to Deer gun this year. Loaded some 140gr Sierra Gamekings which shoot under inch @ 100 yds (not that it matters for hunting). The old Swedish Mauser definitly like the heavier bullets seated way out.

Works just fine, I just wish I could have convinced JR. to use it this year.

No deer in my area, but 6.5x55 is my preferred cartridge for caribou, which are at least as big as a very big deer, and which often call for shots well in excess of 300 yards. I'd not hesitate to take pretty much anything with a properly loaded swede...

And bear in mind that north american cartridge manufacturers like to download the 6.5x55 (like they do with most european loadings...), so handloaded 6.5's are on a whole other level yet, compared to girly-man factory loads. Even the girly-man loads WILL bring home your deer, even at longer ranges however.

And if you are tired with the conventional 6.5x55, the 6.5x284 cartridge is even faster and flatter. Use the same barrel.

Amazingly accurate, deadly on deer with no recoil. Closest thing to a "dead ray gun".

Judging from the 140 grain Hornady bullets performance on deer at hundred yards, going clean through "rib to rib", it should also be a fine cartridge for elk and moose :)

I know it's not what Maple Leaf meant but to clear any confusion, is there was any, you cannot shoot the 6.5x284 in the same rifle if your rifle is chambered for the 6.5x55.;)

I've never recovered a bullet from anything including moose to date.I load 42gr of IMR 4350 under a 160 gr Hornady or 42gr of N-204 under a Sako 156gr slug.Long lethal drillbits.Use 140's for open county game ie: deer/ antelope Have a Win FWT and a Husky 1942.......................T3 soon.......Harold
