What in your opinion makes a good hunter? Is it the guy that drives around and get his game thats standing on the side of the road,or is it the guy that scouts out and area sets up a blind and glasses the area and waits for his opportunite but gets nothing?

Your question is loaded to self regulate to select the response you want and believe to be true.

Why post it?

It's like posting the question: "Why are road hunters #######s?"

Your question has determined that there is no appropriate response other than the latter part of it.

A good hunter in my opinion is what he makes of himself. Whether or not others agree with his tactics, how he presents himself, respects the animals and other hunters is what seperates a good hunter from the rest. A good hunter learns the behaviour of his target species. He knows when and where to find them, and tries his best to kill quickly and humanely and makes every effort to retrieve downed game. A good hunter helps others, and practices good safety in all aspects of hunting. A good hunter doesn't necessarily have to bring home game to be a succesful hunter. And a good hunter is someone other hunters enjoy having around.

As they say it don't matter how .... only how many!!!:D

Seriously though, the really great hunter's have that peristent dogged, unwavering style of persuit or patience, & can stay mentally focused on their task/prey 24/7. Oh Yeah ... and it helps to have a good set of eyes & ears. My dad was always a pretty good hunter ....... but was deafer than a woodpecker in a hail storm.

How about the best hunter is the one who uses methods that are legal and ethical. Hunting a road can be just as ethical as walking ten miles into the bush.

I am tired of the hunting elitist who feel they have a bigger d*ck than every one else because they feel their method is somehow more macho than some one else's.

If the conditions warrant it I'll drive around and check out fields and such. Other times I'll walk all day long or sit in a stand for hours.

The best hunter is the one who is versatile, knowledgeable, and respectful of others

One that follows the laws and has good ethics and doesn't try to put people down that do things differently than him. An ethical guy that drives around is just as good of hunter as the ethical guy that climbs the highest peaks. Putting ourselves above others because of the way we do things is a slippery slope! Don't really see the point of this thread.

Hunters that have filed down their incisors to points and tackle the deer from behind and cut their throats with their teeth are the best hunters. The rest of us are mere posers.

I would say a good hunter is one that does not attempt to rank other hunters and their legal methods of hunting. Your question is designed to create division amongst the hunting brotherhood, shame, shame, shame!

For your information, plenty of hunters are not as able bodied as others and may not be able to get off the road too much. My dad is an example of that. He has a bad back. Still likes to get out with me when he can. If we get something, I'm the one that does the hard work, but he still gets to enjoy the hunting experience. That's both legal and ethical in my book!!!

Good Hunter?? Many things to many people. I'm sure a guy that bags game can be labelled a "good hunter" but I hear the echos of respect of environment and quarry, sharing your craft/skills with others as key traits. Ultimately coming home feeling like your day was spent enriching your life and relaxing in nature allows you to call yourself a "good hunter"

Some hunters are only 'good' when using dogs, lures &/or bait. They would be a whole lot less than 'good' if they had to track, stalk and/or outwit their prey on a one-to-one basis. Because there are a plethora of different views, perspectives, jurisdication rules/regulations and tactics that exist in the hunting game - it might not be ethical or fruitful for that matter - to try and discern what's what or who's who in each respective 'best' category for the individual game categories & the extra resources they might happen to employ in their chase.

I am staying out of this one....:runaway:

Someone please define ethical?

Everyone has different ethics.

As long as you follow Wildlife Laws and Hunting Regulations you are O.K?

Being ethical is following a code of conduct that you believe is correct. It matters not what the next guy thinks, its what you believe. As an example, some folks think it is unethical to shoot upland birds before they take to the air, and as long as they follow that conduct, they believe they are hunting those birds ethically. That is not something that is written in law, but those who follow that code of conduct believe in it strongly, although I doubt that the bird has a preference one way or tother. Generally speaking we can all agree that obeying the law is ethical and hunting illegally is not. Perhaps I would say that anyone whose conduct brings hunting into disrepute is unethical.

WHAT MAKES A GOOD HUNTER
by: Sarah McCat

- A 12.34 in. #####.
- 12 fluffy feathers (I.e. not afraid of anus play)
- Someone who enjoys Tolstoy, fine wine, long walks on the beach at sunset, and pony's.
- Green stuff; got to have lots of green stuff!
- Must love children (Oh, and cats!)
- and doesn't eat crackers in bed.

P.S. A lead trigger finger, and a psychotic hatred of Animals are also a plus!
