How many have a Big Bang gun?

At the local range here that "loans" you a gun when you buy their ammo I've had a few friends join me and it has become a short but fun tradition to finish the night with a Big Bang. The Big Bang of choice being a round per person of the S&W .460 shot out of the big S&W hand cannon revolver. And this puppy never fails to impress. Everyone that has shot it has craved blood rare red meat for dinner at the pub following the session... :D

There's certainly no way I'd want to make such a beast a regular shooter but I can't help thinking that it would be fun to have such a howitzer in the collection just to finish up the odd day with a round or two just to stir up the soul.

Is this some sort of inner defect of my soul or are there others out there that feel the same way? If so what are you using for your Big Bang tour de force?

Keep in mind this has nothing whatever to do with "stopping power", deadly target accuracy or any of the usual shooter's goals. I'm talking about the "Big Show" that simultaniously makes your palms sweat as you prep yourself, humbles you when it fires but yet makes you giggle like a schoolgirl inside where no one can see when it's all over.

Ya, we take a lot of people out that do the big bang thing when we are working.

They usually finish with the .50 AE or the .500 Mag... depending on what interests them.

Lots of noise, really draws a crowd when those guns go off, its pretty cool to see.

I'm too scared to shoot the .460 or .500

One of the regulars let me shoot one of his .454 Casull reloads and it actually smacks your hand harder and lifts the revolver it was in higher than the .460. You really should get out to DVC and try out a single shot. It's pricey but it'll put a helluva grin on your mug once you recover.... :D

In the states now and again, the last time for work, and they were advertising these awsome bear pistols one 460 other 500, and my buddy down there had a buddy who says, your wrist twists with the rifling when shootin 460. I wanna try!

REally? what's the price of a single shot? (460)

I have a new to me 454 casull super redhawk with a soon to be 4.2" barrel :)

does that count ?

 Uh.... ya. I'd say you're definetly in the club.... :dancingbanana:

The Redhawk and Super Redhawk caught my eye as well. And shortening the barrel to the minimum legal length will ensure more of the powder is still burning when it leaves the barrel! :D I'd love to be there for the first test shots.

I'll have to try some .44 Mag next time to see how it compares. I've read in looking at this the last couple of days that the 454 has more thump due to the heavier bullet weight but the .460 has more velocity but less foot-lbs when it hits but that translates to less of a slap to the hand.

Waltscandy, have you shot a .454 at all? If so how does it compare with the .500? And yeah I'd guess that a full freakin' cylinder of them would leave anyone a little shell shocked... :runaway: :D

Am I right in saying that a revolver definetly gives a better show than a pistol for all this thanks to the leakage? To shoot through something like a Desert Eagle or a Thompson Center Contender would certainly still be an "event" but I would think that much of the flame and pressure wave show would be directed downrange and not flood the shooter's senses so completely.

And of course no discussion such as this would be complete without a link to the Grand Pooba of big showy revolvers. The custom .600 Nitro Express Special.....

Hand cannons

Well men I can answer a few of your interests about the big guns. 44mag 29 6" verses 454 casull 3" 460S&W 5" and 500S&W 8 3/8". All factory loads. The worst one to fire is the 3" 454 casull. It is just plane nasty and I have a pretty good grip. A beautifully made gun but it rolls up in your hand hard when it goes off. The 460 smith handles the same load using one hand. The 460 handles the factory loads with ease.(hornady evelution) very nasty muzzle blast. Even when you load your own it is rather tame. Now the 500 smith with the 500 gr hornadys draws a crowd,it's not nasty to shoot it is just a hand cannon. If I was only going to buy one I would get the 5" 460. The next toy 45-70

If you don't mind me asking, what is the BBY range that "loans" you a gun to use?

That would be DVC out in Coquitlam just off the Maryhill bypass.

Call them and find out how much it costs depending on your own circumstances. It varies based on how much baby sitting you need based on what certifications you are carrying.

The .460 isn't cheap at $8 a round. But it's a helluva way to end the day. Yeah, I KNOW it's well above market value but you're getting the gun to shoot it with as well. And since it's a gun that not many folks would bother to buy the whole experience is worth the per round cost to just try it I'd say.

Ah, yah, I know them. Although I misunderstood when you said "loaned" but what they do is rent. for $$! a bit different.

$8 is probably worth it compared to $7 for .50AE at Phoenix. I think the .460 is way more powerful though.

BCRider, No I have not shot the .454....Yet!!
Yes the revolver does put on more of a SHOW and has more recoil than a semi-auto!!
The other toy that I enjoy is my .45/410 Derringer Snake Slayer. Not that big a caliber but Damned hard to hold onto with those small rosewood grips!!

I must be a sucker for punishment.
