Deer, or any other hunting with your milsurp

I don't make it into the big fancy city very often (I am in the valley)so I willbe loading my own with cast bullets. I just need to play around and find the right load :D

Nah, you're not a curse. And you are welcome over for supper and a few beers. Although, a nice Bordeaux or Malbec would go quite well with venison. Still have a doe tag to fill, you feel like going out on Saturday? What's Nick up to these days? Why don't we grab the Aussie and head out?

I'm not home this weekend, maybe the one after? I forget when the season closes...Regardless, next time I'm in, I'll bring over some goose jerky and kebabs and we will feast. I shot a lesser Canada last weekend, must have been young of the year; I've seen bigger chickens! It'll be tasty;)

It definitely does. Took it out yesterday to check that it was sighted in. I haven't had the time to go out shooting this year, but was still managing to group inside the 4 inch bullseye standing unsupported at 100 yards! (I know, bad, but please bear in mind that this was my first time shooting in 4 months.:redface::rolleyes:)

That's definitely minute-of-moose! I'd love to have a Ross.. And a full wood L-E.. And a Mosin.. :) I think the Ross rifle is one of the most interesting, though.
 
I love the ross, it is incredibly smooth to handle (though opening the bolt takes a bit of getting used to, as the spring actually resists you and feels like you're pulling on a rubber band). I find it better ergonomically than the k31, though there are some advantages and disadvantages to both...

I really want to get my hands on an 8mm mauser steyr M-95 too, to round out the strait pull collection.

Back on topic though - anyone have pics of their milsurp hunting rifles, perhaps posed with their deer or bears?
 
While I love milsurps to death, life is too short to hunt with an ugly gun. I usually use Ruger No.1's, my custom Remington 700LH in .300H&H or a nice pre-64 model 94 with an early steel lyman 66A sight. This year I shot my deer with a nice little Ruger No.1A in .30-06 using ww2 Lake city brass, 150gr Nosler partition over 46.5gr of H4895. It was a show-stopper load.

Military Hunting Rifle This Season

I was thinking of using my FR-7, FR-8, or my Brazilian M-968. Thay are all in 7.62 and fairly light, well the first two are light the 968 is about average weight of a military surplus rifle.
 
Used my 1943 longbranck No.4 thats been in the family for at least 30 years if not more. It has been sporterized long ago, but this year I put on a monte carlo stock I had from a parts gun and I also had a scope mounted this fall. Once again 1 shot 1 kill on a Mule deer doe on Monday. Took it out yesterday as well to try to fill my 2nd doe tag, but I didn't see any in the right spot for a shot. That was the end of the season for me this year as I go in for surgery next week. NO time left to cut up meat before the surgery.

Ps. to the left is what the surgery is on!!! Left ankle fusion

also taken deer with various other milsurps..... portugese M904/39, longbranch #4, yugo M48, spanish 93, norwegian K98k, and maybe some others that i forget.

i've also taken various milsurps out for elk, moose, and goat without success.

should have more to add by the end of the month.

I'm almost regretting giving up a weekend hunt to visit the folks now:redface:


P.S. - what's the M-95 chambered in?
 
My first big game rifle was an early .303 Lee-Metford (UGH...bubba'd), I do not recall the year. I used it for deer too numerous to count and bear. Its replacement was a 1906 Winchester 38-55 that I got 2 years ago.
 
OKay, I got this the first week of deer. Yes it is bubba milsurp. My LE No 5, I parkerized it and out it in a nice sporter stock.

Jason got the scope sorted iout for me, (had problems with the mount moving). The barrel is free floating.

I missed on the first shot (200+ yards slow run). The bear then started to bolt, bucking his rear end and sahking his head. He ran directly towards me (he did not know where I was. At about 150 yards I let the second shot go, hit high on the shoulder, through the heart and out the ribs.

174 g FP 303 with WC735 powder.
