I like Aimpoints, Comp ML3, M4. or Micro.
If you want magnification you can add 3X magnifier in LaRue pivot mount (although obtaining the mount could be hard)
You'd have to look at your local matches to see. Where I am, the matches and ranges are such that magnification just isn't required. When I shoot in Michigan, it's helpful, but still not required.do most matches have ranges that won't require magnification, or short enough where magnification would be detrimental?
What do people recommend as a "typical" sight for 3 gun using an AR?? red dot? 1x-4x ???
Thanks
Well actually it would put him in Open for the tournament....

And while I'm just a single voice in the choir, that strikes me as wrong. Surely there has to be a simple way to have each segment of a three gun match as a stand alone match.

You do realize that an optical sight on an AR, or Shotgun, will put you into Open for everything, just thought I would throw that out there, in case you were unaware.
At the Barrie 3 Gun in the Fall, the EESA crew was doing a good job of hitting a Clay Pigeon at 60 yards with Iron sights, that is the most difficult shot that I have witnessed yet, other than the 300 metre Hail Mary target at the EESA 3 Gun in the Spring
I am petty sure the individual disciplines are calculated per firearm used, but the use of any optical sight on a specific "Gun" gets you slotted into "Open" for the tournament. So, go one, go all, as far as the Tournament is considered.
