What is the finish?
Finish does not look original, looks to have been polished, not sure if it was blued before being polished (originaly it was parked), take off the grips and see what the finish is like under them.

Is it just me or do Remington Rands get chromed way more often than other makes?

What you have there is a early 1944 mfg Remington Rand 1911A1. The small parts on it look correct for the era. Unfortunately, as you already know it has been nickeled at some point. Plus, it seems the "FJA" [Frank J. Atwood] inspector's initials/stamp [should be on the left side of the frame below the slide stop] has also been removed.
Not sure what you mean about taking it apart to confirm if the serial number matches? There won't be a serial number under the firing pin stop or anywhere else on the slide to correspond to the frame serial number...
Personally, I'd just clean it up and shoot it the way it is.

Your frame is not manufactured by Remington Rand. The GHD inspection mark is Guy H. Drewry found on Colt frames.
Your frame was manufactured by Colt in 1943. If you have a Remington Rand slide then your pistol is a mix master.
Circa ~ 20 years ago Lever Arms got in several cases of old USGI 1911's. Some were very nice, original, matched, examples in varying condition. There were some real beaters, too. And some that were completely nickeled. I recall some of the "beater" ones were going for $99 each..... Some of them cleaned up quite nicely, though:

The camera and the flash really do enhance the scratches that you normally do not see with the naked eye. I believe it looks a lot better in person.
Its not so easy to get guns nickle plated these days, I'd keep it as is. If it gets to the point where it needs refinishing, then consider parking it.
