M14 with 18.5" barrel

So it is just a shooting range thing, with the snap shooting? Isn't a longer barrel more accurate? I am not being flippant, just curious. I might buy a second M14 and looking at my options...

No, but longer barrels do equal higher velocity. Velocity and FPS in relation to accuracy can be argued for eternity.

Shorter barrels can be "stiffer", vibrate differently, and therefore be more accurate. Barrel harmonics matter more than barrel length. When we weld the gas system and re-pin or loctite the op rod guide, we are playing with the harmonics. We want the barrel to vibrate exactly the same way each time, which makes for better accuracy. Glass bedding and free floating also work the same way. Either putting consistant pressure on the barrel, or no pressure at all, so it can virbrate freely. Consistency is everything.

Sometimes making a barrel shorter changes the amplitude of the vibrations and can make it either more, or less accurate. I have heard of people shortening a barrel and getting bad results, then taking off another little bit, and getting an accurate barrel again. Seems that M-14s don't mind being shortened, though I can't speak from experience since mone is still full length.

I'm wondering about the noise factor - 22" vs. 18.5". Nobody has commented on this, I don't think. It's got to be louder.

Subjectively, how much louder are they?

This is the one P&D Enterprise made about 10 of these so called SOCOM Norc's.

Correrction Kevin B's M1A was the first one shortened in Canada

I never said i was the first guy to shorten one
but i was, for what it's worth , the first guy to actually register one . We are talking norinco, not springfield M1A, the FRT #'s will not be the same as they are different manufacturers. Check the FRT date with CFC, betcha it's 2008 , sometime in may or june maybe

that's also a good thing to note.... according to "the rules" , once these rifles are chopped they need to have the reggie certs altered to specify the new length  , now how many of us have done that bit of nonsense

I did Kevin B's in 5 yrs ago I did get a cert # from CFC after I reassembled his rifle it was rather interesting to do the build ran like a charm I think Morpheus 32 is the current owner of the rifle if I am not mistaken
