Cleaning the out of the box m14

How do you do this dishwasher cleaning?
Do you put the whole thing in? plus wood?
Do you tear it right down?
Do you use a certain detergent?
and is this best done when the wife is out shopping?:50cal:
Strip it down and put the whole thing in. Small parts in the basket. Get ready to oil it as soon as it comes out. It'll be hot and dry and ready to rust. I use the regular dishwasher detergent pucks. You won't get the parts any cleaner and it gets all the little nooks. Every gun I get, long or pistol, get the same treatment if covered with anything gunky. Just watch anything made of plastic, some types will melt.

My wife is understanding. I just have to wait till the dishes are done.

hey what do u guys think of using brake clean to clean my m14. i used it on one of my mags and it works really well but will it hurt my rifle. i know people use soap and water but i just can't put water on metal without thinking its going to rust. so any other ideas would be great.

I found it works good too but you go thru a butt load and you always miss something just as you run out of it, It won't harm your gun in any way that I can see and it works good on wood too but you need to oil it after you do it. I just tried the dishwasher cleaning and it worked good for me, that's going to be the way I do it for now on.:sniper:
cheers

I just received my M14S from Marstar and cleaned it.

There was just ordinary oil on it like any other new gun.

Certainly no need for a dishwasher.

Is this diswasher thing some kind of joke?

put all your parts in a tupperware or rubbermaid of suitable size. Pour in a bunch of "Simply Green" and clean away all cosmoline, grease, ect. I use a motorized soft bristle tooth brush for the nooks and crannies.
aint no way in hell i'm putting any of my firearms in the dishwasher.

the dishwasher trick was intended to strip the stock of all grease/oil so that it could be refinished with tung oil or a similar product. It will come out of the dishwasher looking like new untreated wood in most cases.

The one point that must be emphasized is that you must clean out the bolt, specifically the firing pin and the track it runs in.
You don't need to disassemble the bolt, some brake cleaner and some compressed air will work fine; but at the end you've got to hear the firing pin sliding freely.

use SG (random concentration with hot water) and G96 (starting to love the smell of the oil), the G96 sure takes anything that was left behind, then as mentioned, used dust-off to remove excess from bolt

Got mine yesterday as well, just oil and white mold like stuff on it. The mags were really sticky but thats all fixed now. Thanks Johnone for getting it here before Xmas!

I'm sure anything like brakekleen, naptha, lighter fluid, rubbing alcohol, vodka, rye, scotch.Think I'm gonna get hit for the last three. Going to use some rubbing alchol on mine tonight and see how it works.

How far do you strip it down to put in the dishwasher? Strip as much as it shows in the manual and then dishwasher that and then spray with oil afterwards? Do I have to take apart the trigger assembly?
