Norc M-14 White Mold on Stock?/Arrived with Mold. (Threads combined)

Mine had more white stuff than the one above. I washed it inside and out with handcleaner and hot water, then wiped it down with Javex bleach to kill the mould.

Now it will give it a nice oilfinish.

Rifle is otherwise excellent.

This is different this time. If this was some kind of powder, it would be all over the gun, metal parts and all but this white stuff is only found on wood stock and is a bit slimy when you run a rag through it....gotta be mould and if it is mould, then it is toxic. I am a newbie myself, this is my first M14 (got it yesterday) and you can see the white stuff on my M14 in the pictures a couple of posts above. Plus the smell isn't great....smells like some old rotten wood in combination with oil.....it could very well be me but others express the same kind of concern. I want to keep the stock but I am not sure I should. The metal parts are nice and clean and just too well oiled which was a pleasant surprise but the stock....the stock is a completely different matter.

It’s anthrax!

All you guys afraid of the strange white stuff on your stocks can just rebox everything and send it to me. I'll decontam them, make them safe for your delicate conditions and hang on to them for a very long time to ensure that they'll never be the cause of your sneezing.

Seriously, it's just wood mould. Seen it on 2x4s, plywood, beaverboard, chipboard, hell, anything made from wood that gets damp and put in warm, dark places (sea containers). Guess the fear comes from sanitized city life or sumpin'. Get some Detol or other disinfectant and swab the sucker down. Get it cleaned and get shooting it instead of hanging around here worrying about nothing. Of course, you could always send it back to John at Marstar who'll be more than happy to sell it to someone that will actually shoot it instead of being afraid to touch it.

There seems to be some sort of running joke on this site to try and get the newbies to do all sorts of crazy things like use dishwashers on their guns...

Why are you screwing with the newbies?...

Srsly, brother. I've used the dishwasher thing myself, it works great.
It's a little hard on painted surfaces and I wouldn't use it on a finished stock; but for a preliminary cleaning of the trigger group, flash eliminator/muzzle brake and gas system parts it's hard to beat.
The next time my M93 is all gunked-up from kids shooting a brick of cheap ammo through it, I'm going to use the dishwasher on it.

there are stickies in this forum detailing all the neat things you can do at home to your m14s.
the well practiced method of using a dishwasher to remove the finish and any other foreign material from the stock, is not us screwing with the newbies. My dishwasher has a sanitation cycle........
this is how it's done.
remove the buttplate assembly with a flat head screw driver.
all other stock metal can remain in place.
use a good grease cutting detergent and put your stock in and run the dishwasher through a full pots n pans cycle including the dry time.
let the stock sit in a warm dry place for a day or so and then it's ready for a sand and refinish to your desired stain or oil finish.

NOW here is where all you paranoid folks can relax.....
ya get some CLR ya see, and you can get it at rona or cantire...... ya know :D
okay i'll stop being a smart ass, got some captain jack in tonite hehehe  . Just run your empty dishwasher through it's sanitation cycle with a small amount of CLR or use the pots npans cycle if no sanitizing cycle.

It gets mighty hot in a dishwasher..... i'm pretty sure if day old dishes don't taint the dishwasher.

anyhow...... try it if you dare :D

My mistake. I didn't realize you guys were serious. I sure as heck wouldn't put one of my guns in a dishwasher. That includes my new M14S which seems fine using standard gun care techniques. The previous M14s rifles must have been a real mess to require you to go to all that trouble.

By the way the white stuff was heroin. Cocaine comes from South America, heroin from Asia.:)

I got my rifle all stripped and ready to go into the dishwasher, and it didn't fit  I had to do it by hand and it's all spotty. Ugh, more work for me this weekend (since CGN is going to be down, I guess I have nothing better to do anyways...)

I didn't just mean when the guns were new. I meant after a few days of shooting when it is time to clean them. The gas system and muzzle brakes especially, the dishwasher does a great job of the initial steps.
And because there is no lube, I just drop the bits in a regular load with the dirty dishes.

Edit to add:

You might have to remove all the racks to get the stock in and pull the flash eliminator to get the barreled action in.

well i feel lucky, mine came in a sealed bag, when i opened it, cosmoline was still pretty liquid, the stock was soaked and soft, could chip with with my finger (not even with my nails)
Neither the thick sticky cosmo nor the white mold haha

I got my boxing day M14S and man they all had mold on them to some degree. (i.e. one had just a little bit and one was totally covered in mold) A bit disgusting -- I was planning on refinishing them anyway but the mold just put a hurry up on the desire to get them done.

I had mine come with the white stuff on it too, i've used about 9 kettles of water and siege cosmoline cleaner that sucked the yuck right out!

Did the fuzz coated ones not have a plastic wrap on them when you opened the box? When mine came this past January it was wrapped in plastic inside the styrofoam inside the box. All I had to deal with was the crappy chinese grease.
What does John from Marstar say about the fuzz?

All my m14's (10 of them) came wrapped in plastic inside the styrofoam with the standard stuff. What I did notice was that the last 5 of them had a lot of mold on them - the first five didn't have any mold. Something I did notice is that the staff at Marstar must know about them as the first five had the plastic cut wide open and the last five only had a small surgical cut to check the Serial Number/markings - it was very noticeable (i.e. the first five I could have taken the whole rifle out of the wrap if I wanted the last five had a tiny incision by the rear of the receiver where I could only see the writing on the receiver). I don't really care as the mold seems to wipe away - it just looks super disgusting - the stock stocks look like crap anyway. I always refinish them, hopefully the mold doesn't come back.

Both of mine came sealed in plastic. I wish I had a camera, but I didn't. Both cardboard boxes had been opened and re-taped. Again, my comments about moldy bread, stand. I knew there was something wrong as soon as I opened the box, even through the plastic bag.

There was so much mold inside the action and trigger assembly on mine, it had growth right into the springs.
