Laurentian Wildlife - canned hunts...

The main factor between canned and not canned is the fence. Yes some non fenced hunts can be easy but all animals have to be found, and hunted in a situation where there may or may not be game in the area. Nothing guaratees caribou or muskox because they have the whole tundra to wander around in.

Animals in a fenced enclosure are guaranteed to be there and they will be found whether it is 50 or 500 acres. Therefore any animal shooting behind a tall fence is not hunting.

If you wander around long enough, you'll find out that there are natural barriers all around eventually. It's just a matter of scale.

Natural barriers and fences are two very different things. I don't think there is a fenced hunt out there anywhere near the same scale as natural barriers.

Maybe if you fence in 50 square miles you might be getting close to real hunting.

Sorry if this stance on fenced animal killing may offend some but hunting is a traditional pursuit. The roots of hunting began well before fences. Yes the weapons have changed and I guess that that sets the stage for a whole new arguement but I'll stick to one thing at a time.

We can get into a game of " what if ..." but I think you are missing the point. Canned hunts have transplanted, captured, or domestically raised animals placed in a fenced enclosure. This is not a natural state and is therefore not what I'd consider hunting.

You're island example should also state that the animals on that island got their on their own and therefore could also leave on their own. If you find a sweet location like this good on you for " hunting it out " before some outfitter gets exclusive rights and starts selling seats on shooting stands ( another rant for another day).

I would not rule out going on a "canned hunt" one day myself just to experience it. Hell I may even have a good time. If I did I'd take it for what it was. It would be no different than paying to go on a trip, or an amusement park, or some other activity. There is nothing wrong with it but it is not hunting in its' true and proper form.

So how do you feel about moose hunting in Newfoundland? The moose were transplanted, and did not get there on their own.The distance to leave the island would also make for a long swim if they wanted to leave.

Newfoundland isn't 1 square mile.

What if aliens transported cape buffalo to a remote island in northern Sask and fitted them with GPS locators and painted them fluorescent green. Would that be hunting ?

I've given my 2cents worth I'm done. :sucks:

Newfoundland isn't 1 square mile.

And neither are some of the hunting ranches. The point is that everyone has a different opinion as to what constitutes fair chase. To some people it comes down to fences,to other people, size is a factor.

This isn't quite as black or white as you might think at first glance-For instance-where would pheasant clubs fit it?-where you pen raise the birds, pay for the number you want released and the handler sets out just before you come?Is that a ''canned '' hunt?Would it make a diference if it was a deer or elk being pen raised or a pheasant?-both are human raised ,fed and conditioned

[I actually don't object to pheasant clubs -not all birds are shot and the excapees that survive help rebuild the local pheasant population in the surrounding area but the question is what exactly constitutes canned hunts?]

I hunted moose there this fall, and to me its quite a fair chase hunt. There is no way you are following a moose there for very long. The hunting is much the same as anywhere, spot & stalk, or cow-calling. No driving around or road hunting where we were. We didn't see our vehicles for the whole week...

I wouldn't call 111,390 sq km a canned hunt. :)

Yours is the only one that counts because you slept in a cold tent.
Please re post my entire post.
Yes I guess I am uninformed, when I have followed a musk ox herd in a snowmobile and killed it,walk over the hill and shoot a caribou, float down a river and shoot a sleeping Hippo, perhaps then I will be able to state my opinion.
I believe it will be the same like shooting cows.
Canned hunts, fenced ,free chase they end result is the same death.Tie one up who cares.

Crow...is there a possibility that you don't hunt at all or are just so uninterested in hunting that you feel the desire to slag all forms of it? Maybe listen to some guys who have been there are done these things rather than basing your entire opinion on one television program. I'm sure there are lots of guys on here that can tell you about spending days backpacking for caribou, or days in the frozen barrens in search of musk ox or still hunting hippos and shooting them at point blank range in a charge but then that would stop your little slagfest wouldn't it? Ya, better to base your opinions on one television show than to actually listen to those that have done it.....gotta love the interweb.

I'd give my opinion of musk ox and caribou hunting a bit more credence than yours, yes.....because I've actually been there, not just seen it on television.....but then what do I know. Some choose to live life and others choose to life life through a box in front of the couch.....

Crow I'm not trying to be a #### here but the fact that you think one hunt you saw on television represents all hunts betrays your inexperience. The hunt you saw may indeed have been that easy but to think all hunts are represented by that one is rediculous and those with experience would realize that. I had a friend spot a bighorn ram from the truck and it was dead 15 minutes later. Does that represent all bighorn hunts....of course not, just as the condensed version of the musk ox hunt you saw on television does not represent all musk ox hunts. Even you must see how naive you appear.

I know many people that have come home empty handed from both musk ox hunts and caribou hunts.........think about it!

Sheephunter, why are you upset at me I said nothing derogatory about you.
My opinion is uniformed as you have posted here.
I have only stated my views on what I have seen on television.
I have not misrepresented my self by saying I have been on any of those hunts.
How would you know if I hunt or not can you read my mind?
You stated you are going to Africa and there can be no fences, but you are OK with shooting a sleeping Hippo?
I would rather have a fence and a Hippo who might be awake.
Are you for fenced hunts or are you against fenced hunts,or to each his own.
As hunters we like to make everyone think it is harder than it really is.
You are going to Africa to hunt list the species you are going for,if you miss out on them I will send you a box of beer.

That's the thing CROW...I'm not for or against anything and would never denegrate anyone else's experience by saying it was like shooting a cow. Hunting behind fences is not for me but I respect those that want to do it and would never take away from their experience by saying something so derogatory that it was like shooting a cow. How could I know if I wasn't there.

I respect your personal beliefs but have a hard time with people denegrating other's accomplishments and quite frankly, that's what your comments were doing. It's extra hard to take when those comments have no basis in anything but one television program. That's how I know you are an inexperienced hunter......am I wrong?

Yes you are wrong,I think you and I look at hunting differently. If I am wrong I apologies this is only my opinion.

I believe you are a species Hunter, the more you have on your resume the more you feel you are a more accomplished hunter.

I hunt a very few species,I hunt white tails, bow and muzzle loader(shoot fawns and young doe's love the meat.)

Ducks and Geese, some times with decoys, some times jump shooting off rivers and ponds.

Crow calling, wing shooting them, one of my favorites

Ground hogs and pigeons at the farmers request.

Coyote tracking, the best hunting there is.

Turkey shooting fantastic.(not that smart)

Grouse shooting in the north for 5 days a year, interesting walking, difficult shooting no.

Pheasant farm shooting(notice not Hunting)

Rabbits why

Bears over donuts no (stalking them in BC might be interesting)

Moose to much work.

I have friends who have caribou Hunted, The Hunting was like shooting a cow, the fishing was fantastic. (Quebec)

What gives me a laugh are the guys that are shaking after they shoot a animal, wtf they jump around like they have got a cure for cancer.

Killing anything is not that difficult unless you are using your bare hands, lets not make it sound more difficult than it is.

As for our exchange I enjoyed are sparing back and forth without it we would be back to the real important posts, like what shot gun should I buy, what scope should I buy,if I take 4 rifles down to the shopping center do you think it would be a problem (wt f are you stupid)

We have different interest and that is what makes the world go around. As a Hunter my favorite thing is stupid Hunters they make it easier for us.

Gents,

lets not get personal....you have made your points, now move the discussion forward....your both restating your positions again. We have deviated far from the original question. I don't want to have to lock it due to a little grudge match. Civil discussions...encouraged...personal attacks....not allowed. Lets walk carefully at this point please...

THanks

Jeff

Sheephunter I do not feel You have made any personal attack against me,I feel we just see things differently.
