Smith & Wesson 686 .357 (pictures)

same thing happened with me i wanted to buy a revolver and my gunshop had just received a big order of S&W so i checked them out and when i saw the 7 shot unfluted i just knew it had to be special!
Finally found out on the forum that it was a special limited run made for the canadian market with a 5 inch barrel

As far as I'm considered, S&W makes the best revolvers you can buy. Accurate, smooth and reliable. I have several S&W wheel guns & I love each one of 'em! Enjoy your purchase!

Regards,

What do you clean it with to get the satin finish looking like chrome?

Here's mine before it'd fired its first round:

I just picked up a 686 for myself. After a bunch of rounds through my pistols, I have to say I am absolutely in love with this revolver.

I like shooting it, I like cleaning it, I like looking at it, I like holding it - which is more than I can say about my semi's.

Enjoyed your story.

Good on you,

Question - my 686 came with the front sight being black (which I find a little hard to use in low light or against darker targets). I see both pictured here with red sight up front. Is that factory or add on? Either way what is it called and where do I get it?

the red insert came with mine, i am not overly impressed with it fwiw. if light hits it the right way it may as well be black any way :)

i use never-dull (its some sort of cotton baton type polish in a can) from canadian tire. i probably clean it a little too often lol.

Nice gun.

I use Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish on my stainless revolver. GP100. Makes for low effort cleaning of all the black crap after firing and will gradually polish the satin finish away. I won't sidetrack your partisan S&W thread with a Ruger pic, but it's here. That pic was taken after only a few polishings. It's shinier now. I don't if it will ever be like "chrome" but I only polish by hand. A rotary tool would probably speed things along.

Enjoy your new wheelgun!

i saw that picture and she is a beaut. if i had a ruger i would never sell it either :D

On the 50 m range, any precision?

to be honest i haven't spent a whole lot of rounds at the 50, maybe 50 tops. i found the jacketed .357 winny's to be tighter than the wolf lead rounds (not pictured). i put all of them on to a 10 inch target with a 7 inch cluster being the best i could do. i am not a match shooter by any stretch and think a better shooter would tighten it up a lot more....where's boris :D

i just put 300 rounds of cast bullets through my 686 today. the cylinder is BLACK. i will have to try the never-dull on it tommorow after i get some. everybody that has shot this gun imediatly wants to buy it, it is a fantastic shooter.

a trick if you are careful. get fat straw, like the ones you get with a mcdonalds milkshake. cut a piece long enough to sheath the eject rod. put on a cordless drill and slowly begin turning the cylinder (faster once you are sure everything turns without wobbles). it really speeds up the buffing on the cylinder. if you are concerned about marking the rod at all, just double up on the straw.

Nice buy and pics, I like the per-ma-grin :D

I have a 6" version and the only thing I can think of that I don't like about it is the colour of the trigger and hammer. I wonder if it would clean up with a polishing also...

SF

YEah - my trigger and hammer are black after one visit to the range. I got the rest of the gun nice and shiney so they kinda stick out. I tried toothbrush with solvent and light application of polish but still there.

I was't too sure if this was par for the course or correctable. Any ideas would help.

now that you mention it lol. i may try the trigger and hammer now to see what i can do with it, if anything. it seems to be almost like a heat treatment has been done on it from first look. i'll give it a go and keep you posted.

That's one damn fine looking revolver. As much as I love my new GP100 I see a 686 in my future too, lol. Can't get enough of those wheel guns! :D

same for me lol. i have always like the rugers gp100 and blackhawk offerings. i will have one some day only not in stainless. i can't go through all that polishing again :D
