Hi everyone,

Here's a classic case of spending more money on a refurb project than the final result's value :)

Got a sporterized P-14 last year (Eddystone-made). Too bad the bore was not... exactly as described... :( But anyways, I thought since it was my first P-14 project, it would be a good tutorial for myself.

Finding parts took time. First, I looked for wood parts. Brian (BDL ltd) was kind enough to find me something in good shape. The handguards are new, while the stock is used but only needed two minor repairs. It's the correct Eddystone style. He also had some metal bits for me - front band, middle band, handguard ring. Too bad the parts were ready for me when the dollar was at its lowest - so I ended up paying something like 40% more than I planned on these...

I also was missing the rear sight, and Sly_Old_Fox had one for me. Thanks SOF!

Then, Pblatzz dug deep in his parts bins and found the rear sight spring. Yay!

Jason (gunsmith in Ottawa) was able to remove the front sight guard which didn't want to experience life off the barrel. I think he's a wizard and uses magic spells to do what he's able to do, but that's another story. Thanks again Jason. I then was able to slide the handguard ring and front band on the barrel.

I stripped the stock, glued the two small cracks, fitted the handguards, did some reblueing, refinished all the wood, installed the rear sight; and a few other things. I'm happier than I thought I'd be once it's all done. I may not feel that way if it shoots all over the place, although after lots of cleaning, the bore did show some leftovers of rifling... We shall see!

Cheers,

Louis

Nice work Lou! BTW, is your dog being in the background a coincidence??:D;)

So taking the front sight guard off a P14 is a bugger? Are they sweated on or pressed on?

Good job. I managed to get the front sight off myself, but was one try away from asking Jason to do it - they are all really tough to remove.

I did up a P14 myself last year using Drill Purpose (DP) parts. A few years ago I bought four DP stock sets on eBay. I repaired the half-moon cuts in the stocks with old walnut, and used the best metal pieces and front handguards. The hard part in all of that is to find the rear hanguard, as the origonals are ruined beyond repair when they were drilled (that explains the other half-moon cut).

You should PM me about the pieces I have left over for future projects, as I've had my fill. ;)

Lou, the Wizard

Lou,I think you need a new name................Something along the lines of: The Wizard of un-bubbaizing..... or maybe Bubba-buster. She sure looks good,Sir.

I second the motion:agree:

Fortunately for Lou, this SOF is old enough to know that as soon as you throw something out, you will need it.

That rear sight that I gave Lou came from a Win. P17 with bubba'd wood but the barrell, action etc. left untouched. I hack sawed off 1" of barrell, the two big ugly rear sight protector lugs, hand filed the top of the action down until it approximated the Rem. Mod. 30 (?), filled in the big egg shaped hole under the rear sight with soft steel, peaned in, straightened out the trigger guard, then buffed and polished the action and fittings. A friend made me a heavy cast iron tank, I mixed my own recipe for hot blue and did a very reasonable job; finally inletted and bedded it in a new Bishop stock, drilled and tapped for a Lyman #57 receiver sight (now expoxied on my 1885 Hi-Wall) and mounted a slip-on Lyman front sight base. All of this was done without any power tools about 1958. That rifle would shoot close to 1" 3 shot groups as 100yds. And I was foolish enough to sell it with a fitted wooden case for it about 12 years ago.:bangHead::slap:

Lou do I see something new in your life, that red rifle stand? Nice.

Good job Lou! :)

I'm still looking for the furniture and parts to refurbish my P14.
Two years at it and still no luck. :(

Thanks guys, much appreciate the feedback.

Well, half coincidence maybe :)

I dunno; all I can say is that the tolerances are tight! Although I was able to remove it myself yesterday evening after I came back from the gunsmith. The difficulty may have more to do with age than design.

Well then, I shall PM you Andy ;)

Woodbeef, I like the "Bubba-Buster" idea! Lets Bubba-bust today. Hey Lou, what're ya doing? Bubba-Busting, of course. Oh look, a nicely Bubba-busted rifle. He he he...

SOF, that stand, (plastic - Santa was on a budget), turns out to be quite a useful addition. We'll try it out next time we're on a shooting bench... Soon...

Lou

How much was that plastic stand and where did you find it? I could use such a thing myself.

yes those front sights can be tight.

when I did mine I set everyting up in the 8 ton press and just pressed the barrel out of the front sight.

I was surprised how tight it was and it game way with a nice 'ping' :D

putting it back on was easy enough, just hammer it back on :D

How are they indexed? Is there a pin or screw? Or just lined up by eyeball?

Hey Tiriaq- I wonder if that Ross front sight puller setup would work on a P14 barrel? Sounds like a worse pulling job than the Ross...

The Ross puller set has travelled widely, and has worked on both II and III Rosses. If you want to try it, pm your emailing address. You get to pay postage both ways. In the meantime, I will check and see if it will work on a P-14.

I don't have a P14 ;)...just wondering is all...might help someone else.

Great job Lou! As for value, as long as you get enough coin to start another:)

I just finished a Maltby No.4Mk.I I had to use a Mk.2 stock. The stock is the only set I could find, unused walnut stock from Pakistan. Next is a Savage with a Surrey barrel.

Cheers
Kevin
