I was just wondering what is all involved in getting your restricted firearm license? I have me non-restricted but would like to get into competitions and such with restricted arms. What is the test like. I don't think it would be something I could challenge?

any help is appreciated,

thanks in advance!

personally, i think the restricted course is easier then the non. yes you can challenge it but unless you have some training in handguns, i don't think you would pass. there are questions about different type of handgun bullets, wadcutters, semiwadcutters, FMJ's etc, questions about storeage, display and transportation of restricted (two locks) and paper work is some of he questions that are asked.

Go for it.

I had no prior handgun training! Just buy the book read it a few times, maybe a visit to a range with handgun rentals and your good to go! I bet you get over 90% :)

The Restricted Course book has all you need to know. I was amazed at how much of the Restricted book was a repeat of the PAL book. It just goes a little further where needed.

Wildman, get the book, read it really well, take notes and then go to the course. If you passed the regular PAL easily enough then the restricted course won't be any more a challenge to you than the first one.

You can challenge it. Get the book and read it... I think it's still available around here in PDF format (do a search). If you read the book, you are guaranteed to pass the written.

BUT, I probably wouldn't recommend challenging it as you have no chance to get acquainted with the instructor's firearms before the practical exam. If you sit through the class you should get a lot of time to get acquainted with the guns you will be tested with... So if you sit through the class, you are basically guaranteed to leave having passed... whereas if you challenge, you aren't.

I challenged both, the non-restricted and restricted exams without doing the course. They are pretty easy and all the information you need is in the book.

It's as easy as pie. Read the book once through, then do the practical.

Practical =

1. Here's a bunch of cartridges, find me a a .45 colt, ok that's good, find me a .38 special... ok that's good find me....etc..etc

2. Pick up this revolver, and prove it safe...Ok, good, ok, pick up this automatic, and prove it safe, ok, what cartidge is that firearm chambered for, ok good

3. Ok, pick up that pistol, and put on a secure locking device, (**prove it safe first)

4. Ok, how is a handgun properly put in storage, Ok, good. Ok, how must a handgun be legally transported? Ok what documentation do you need? Ok good.

5. Ok, what do ACT's and PROVE's stand for?

Ok, that's good, we'll send off the results of both your written and practical, and you should get it back in a couple weeks. Then you send it in with your application. Have a nice day.

Like I said. Easy as pie.
